We recently had the chance to connect with Neicy Wagner Geis and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Neicy, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
I just won 5280 Top of the Town for the second year in a row, and in two categories this time, Best Houseplants and Best Gift Shop! It feels like an even greater accomplishment because it was Readers’ Choice, which means the voters had to write me in. Honestly, the number one reason I started my business in the first place, was because I wanted to be an integral part of my community and choose my customers first every day, so it’s truly an honor that they chose me too.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Neicy Wagner Geis, founder and owner of Tigerlily Goods, a sweet little plant shop in North Denver. I specialize in easy to care for houseplants with a strong emphasis on plant care and design. We love to help repot your plants and diagnose any issues you may be having, whether you bought it here or not.
Vintage finds have always been another passion of mine and I just love sourcing fun and original items for the shop. You’ll always find an ever-changing selection of great new and used clothing, funky decor, jewelry, artwork, you name it! As well as a variety of goods from local makers and unique gifts. I love giving entrepreneurs an opportunity to showcase their wares and get out there so there’s a vast selection. It’s often tough to get your foot in the door and I like to make the first step a little easier for them while providing a plethora of goodies for you.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I’d have to say just being a woman is powerful. There were so many moments throughout adolescence which made me realize that. We can obviously conquer anything we set our minds to and once we do, we’re unstoppable. There’s a real fierceness to owning your own business and creating something that’s entirely you, from the ground up. You hold the power to mold every step along the way and can pivot as you see fit. It’s very empowering to realize your success, or failure, relies entirely on the decisions you make and as you navigate through small business ownership, those decisions become second nature. That’s pretty powerful!
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
That nothing is given to you. You have to fight for what you want in this life and if you do, you’ll see great rewards and truly find joy like you’ve never known. I always knew there was more for me and never settled for less. That goes for love too, I knew there was someone out there who loved as fiercely as I do and I found it. We now support each other in our dreams.
If that was all a given, you’d never know what it was like to earn it…I’m grateful for every single struggle I went through, and there were a lot. That made me who I am, resilient, driven and understanding.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely! What you see is what you get and I sometimes have to remind myself to reign it in, lol! I truly love connecting with people, it gives me life!
