We recently had the chance to connect with Kevin Gouran and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Kevin , it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is a normal day like for you right now?
I always start my day hanging out with my Service Dog, Louise. I was honored to be awarded her through a Veterans Service Organization Heel The Heroes to help Disabled Veterans. I try and stay healthy and work out three times a week. In my spare time I work on building my brand and taking care of business tasks.
And, maybe do a little fishing at some great local spots I know.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Launched in July of 2017 by Jim Dorkins. Doc Goodbeard offers all natural beard balms and oils that moisturize and condition your facial hair and skin. Our unique blends our unlike any other men’s grooming products. We use Kokum butter as our main ingredient. No other Beard Care companies use this special conditioner that is unlikely to clog pores.
However, in December of 2021 Jim passed away and Kevin Gouran, a United States Marine and Jim’s business partner took over the company and is the current owner of Doc Goodbeard and still providing the best quality products available today.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I joined the United States Marines in 1977 and served four years active duty which changed my life forever. I was honored to deploy on a WestPac tour to Asia doing a humanitarian mission after the Vietnam War ended. The Marines taught me how to be resilient, responsible and dedicated to hard work. It served me well.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
I grew up in Boulder Colorado and had a typical childhood. However, Alcohol addiction in my family caused trauma and fear as I grew up through my teen years. I promised myself I could never become the thing I hated most. So I joined the Marines at 17. After my Service I had two jobs. My second job I worked for a Fortune 250 company for 28 years and retired at 53 years of age. However, the addiction caught up with me and I have been sober for 17 years. What I learned was to reflect on your life experiences and walk through them and forgive the people who hurt you and ask for forgiveness to the people you hurt.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My friends would say, I just say Be Happy! Thats what matters in life.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope they tell the story that I was kind, helpful and supportive of them. That I was caring and giving to everyone that needed it. And that I made a difference in their life somehow.
