Story & Lesson Highlights with Alyssa Chavez of Monte Vista

We recently had the chance to connect with Alyssa Chavez and have shared our conversation below.

Alyssa, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I am a mother to two wonderful children. I have a newborn baby that has been consuming most of my time and bringing joy to everyone around!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello! I am Alyssa, the owner and operator of Jade Alchemy. I am a sustainable fashion designer and professional model. I am inspired by the natural beauties of Colorado as well as my life experiences.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
My parents raised me to be self sufficient. I know how to cook, garden, do mechanical work, make clothing, and many MANY more useful life skills. They gave me a strong work ethic and taught me everything I know including how to learn anything I desire.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I have wanted to quit more times than I care to admit. I’ve had months with no sales, social media plummeting, items in my inventory for years and other obstacles like mental health that has made my business difficult to run. However, I’ve always persevered and learned there are seasons to business.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
Smart people today are taking every shortcut they can to get the results. Learning the skills, taking the time, and putting in the real work for your passion will pay off much better than taking the easiest route. Actually having knowledge and skill is priceless!

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When have you had to bet the company?
I’ve had to bet my company when speaking against injustices. In the modern world of cancel culture it’s very risky to stand up against any evils publicly. When matters are personally affecting my business I will always make a clear stance which can be risky.
