We recently had the chance to connect with Reggie Riggs and have shared our conversation below.
Reggie, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Yea …. I actually just got my new loft downtown in Denver Colorado after a year of experiencing homelessness. Made me feel proud because of the work I put in after wanting to give up on the daily.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Well , My name as everyone know or if you don’t is Reggie Riggs and I go by Shotbyriggs. I just turned 33 and I’m living in 2 different states (Texas/Colorado). I’ve been a photographer/videographer going on a decade, I love what it does for me and the people I get to meet. As of right now I’m working on making another YouTube channel to have different videos , working more on perfecting my craft & I’m also bringing my son into the videography world with streaming.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
As simple as it sounds I was just Reggie, I was me. I was just someone that lived his life without the care to live up to everything that the world wanted/expected us to be/live. I was more carefree , I was a kid that just wanted to live life as simple as it sounds lol.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely. I almost gave up plenty of times in this life of mines but just most recently when I became homeless for a little over a year. I wanted to give up everyday I was homeless , never would expect myself to get to that low. Friends gave up on me, the world seem like it was closing in, didn’t know where I would sleep, didn’t know how long I would be in this predicament. It was my son Savage that gave me that motivation not to give up, because if I would’ve gave up how would he take that ? Would he think giving up is the thing to do ? Nah I couldn’t let him see that. So I kept grinding until I was able to get my loft downtown in a new city/state.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I’ve always heard that “Better Gear Makes You A Better Cameraman” . Although having better gear/upgrading gear makes you feel good & can to an extent make you a better cameraman, I honestly feel that it comes down to practice , your vision & storytelling . I feel that makes you a better cameraman. Not just purchasing new gear.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m with my son . Everything can be going wrong in my life , a earthquake can be going on outside lol but as long as I’m with my son I automatically feel at peace.
