An Inspired Chat with Justin DeBon

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Justin DeBon. Check out our conversation below.

Justin, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
My customers appreciate the work I do, but a lot of them really just enjoy having company and someone to talk to.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Justin, the owner of Fix It Right Home Repair and Alpine Excavating based in the small community of the Baca Grande in Colorado, where I’ve lived since 1988. I’ve spent years building homes in this unique area and navigating the permitting process, site planning, excavation, and everything that goes into turning a piece of raw land into a home. Through Alpine Excavating, I now help others with the often-overwhelming process of planning and permitting—from creating site plans and drainage layouts to representing clients at POA and county approval meetings.

Alongside that work, I run a YouTube channel called Sloth Construction and have an ongoing series documenting the full process of building homes from start to finish. Viewers get a real, unfiltered look at what it takes—framing, concrete, roofing, HVAC installs, all the way down to the finishing details. It’s not just a construction series; it’s also about showing the reality of building in a small, tight-knit mountain community, sharing tips, and hopefully inspiring others who want to take on their own projects.

What makes my story unique is that I’m not a large-scale builder with a big crew—I’m hands-on, often figuring things out as I go, and I share both the successes and the challenges. My goal is to demystify the home-building process while also providing services that make it easier for others to bring their own home projects to life.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
When the training wheels came off my bike, I felt like I could go anywhere, do anything, I felt free!

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Fear of change and going outside my comfort zone and if I did there’s a chance I would fail. I finally did leave my comfort zone, and it helped my grow and become more confident in myself and my skills.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Continue building my business so my family can be taken care of and something my son can take over when I retire.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
When I go hiking in the mountains, I will stop to take a break and will listen to the wind in the trees, or the creek and the birds singing their songs. There are no distractions, no worries, no past, no future, just now in the moment.
