An Inspired Chat with Nico Galto of Laporte, CO

Nico Galto shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Nico, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
The last time I really felt true joy was a few weeks ago when my family and I spent a weekend up at Rocky Mountain National Park. We’ve learned that some of the best moments we share are in the simplest things-like waking up early for a quiet morning together, away from everything else. Whether we’re hiking or just driving to new places, those slow mornings, just soaking it all in, are what we look forward to most. It’s in those moments, surrounded by nature and with the people I care about, that I feel the most at peace. It’s a feeling that sticks with you, and honestly, it’s something I try to bring into everything I do, whether it’s in my personal life or work

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! We’re Nico and Breanna, owners of Laporte Outdoor Living, a locally rooted, family-owned landscaping company here in Northern Colorado. We’re passionate about creating outdoor spaces that feel like an extension of the home. Our services cover a wide range, from custom hardscapes, xeriscapes, and artificial turf installations, to retaining walls and full-scale landscape design. Whether we’re transforming a backyard, creating a low-maintenance or designing a multi-functional outdoor space, we work closely with our customers to bring their vision to life.
What sets us apart is the personal touch we bring to every project. We understand that everyone has their own idea of what makes a space feel like home, and we’re dedicated to making that happen with quality craftsmanship and attention to detail. We love collaborating with our customers making sure we not only meet their needs but exceed their expectations.
We also deeply believe in the power of collaboration. As a small, family-owned business, we’re always looking for opportunities to work with other local companies and nonprofits. Whether it’s partnering on projects or supporting causes that make our community stronger, we know that helping each other is what makes a community thrive.

Outside of our work, we take pride in the time we spend together as a family, whether it’s hiking in the mountains or enjoying quiet mornings at home. That balance is important to us, and we bring that same sense of connection and care into everything we do

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Oh, that’s a good one! We believe that what really breaks the bond between people is when there’s a lack of authenticity. When someone’s acting out of self-interest or has an agenda, it creates distance and distrust. Relationships, whether personal or professional, should be about balance, where giving and receiving are equal. What restores those bonds? For us, it’s all about forgiveness. Not just forgiving others, but also having the humility to ask for forgiveness when we’ve fallen short. It’s in those moments of honesty and vulnerability that true healing happens. It’s a reminder that we’re all human, and the strength of any relationship comes from the willingness to move forward together, with understanding and respect

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I think suffering teaches you things success never could. When things are going well, it’s easy to feel on top of the world, but it’s in tough times that you really learn who you are. Suffering shows you your limits, but it also reveals your strength. More than anything, it teaches you how to show up for others. It’s not just about handling your own struggles, it’s about how you treat the people you care about during those hard times. Those moments force you to slow down, reflect, and focus on what truly matters: connection, patience, and understanding. Success is great, but it’s the way you handle hardship and how you support your loved ones through it that really shapes you. Ultimately, suffering teaches you that the real value lies in the relationships you build and how you grow together through the tough times.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
We both can agree on that the difference between fads and real foundational shifts comes down to longevity and practicality. In landscaping, it’s easy to get caught up in trends or the ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ mentality, where people want what’s popular at the moment. But trends tend to fade, and what looks good today might not feel right tomorrow. Real foundational shifts are about creating something that’s meaningful and long-lasting. It’s about designing a space that’s not only beautiful but also functional, comfortable, and yours-a space where you can truly relax, enjoy the outdoors, and spend time with the people you love.
The key is to think beyond what’s trending and focus on what works for you, something that fits your style, your needs, and yes, your budget. When we work with customers, we help them create a space that’s practical, timeless, and affordable-without getting lost in what’s just in at the moment. A truly great outdoor space doesn’t have to break the bank, it just needs to be designed thoughtfully, with long-term value in mind. When you invest in that kind of intentional, personalized design, you’re not just building for today, but you’re building something that will continue to bring joy and comfort for years to come.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I strongly believe in working as if no one is watching. It’s important to approach every project with integrity and give your best, regardless of recognition. Doing good work is its own reward.
