Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Timkovich.
Hi Lauren, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Becoming a therapist wasn’t what I thought I was going to do, in fact I originally went to college for costume technology! While I still love fashion and costume, I quickly learned that it wasn’t the right fit for me. What has always driven me has been my interest in people and their stories. While I was in college, I was so intrigued by relational patterns, how we choose our partners, show up in relationships, how we get hurt, and how we heal.
I started my career working with survivors of trauma as a victim advocate in law enforcement, then spent over a decade in healthcare systems supporting people in some of their hardest and most vulnerable moments. I’ve sat with people navigating illness, grief, uncertainty, family conflict, and systems that often felt impossible to move through. I witnessed firsthand how deeply our systems – and our relationships – impact our mental health. Over time, I realized I wanted to go deeper with people, not just support them in crisis. I wanted to work with people for longer periods of time as they healed, grew, and reclaimed their lives.
During the pandemic, I was working in a hospital, and like so many of us, I started to question what I really wanted my life to look like. I was able to take a vacation and during that trip, I found myself wondering, what would it be like to do therapy from anywhere? What if I could actually have more freedom, flexibility, and space to go deeper with clients?
That vacation was the shift I needed and continues to be one of the biggest and most pivotal moments in my life. It was one of those moments where I felt so clear and inspired about what I wanted to be doing next.
When I returned home, I began talking to other private practice owners and therapists about how they started, gathered my research, and began visioning what I wanted to offer to others within my practice. I wanted to build a practice that gave me the chance to do therapy the way I believe it’s meant to be: relational, transformative, and tailored to the person. In February 2022, I opened my practice.
Now, I work with individuals and couples untangle the stuck patterns they find themselves in with their relationships, understand their attachment needs, and find more clarity, confidence, and connection. I integrate evidence-based, attachment-focused therapies, with real-world insight and a dash of humor, because I believe healing doesn’t have to feel so formal, it should feel human. At the core of everything I do is this belief: how we connect to ourselves and others changes everything. That’s how I came up with my tagline: Relationships are my business – because how we connect changes everything.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but it has certainly been rewarding. Personally, like many therapists I know, I didn’t get here without doing my own work. I’ve had to face my own anxiety, grief, and relationship challenges along the way. I truly believe that is part of what makes me a better clinician. I know what it’s like to feel stuck, to overthink everything, and to question if you’re ever going to feel differently. That experience gives me deep empathy for my clients. As I continue to work on my personal growth, it gives me a whole lot of respect for the courage it takes to show up in therapy.
Professionally, starting a private practice mid-pandemic was both scary and exhilarating. There was a lot I didn’t know, especially on the business side of things. Now, to my surprise, I’ve grown to really love the business side of things. It was also scary to go from a job with a consistent caseload, pay, and clinical support to a completely different role where these things aren’t a guarantee. However, this change has helped me establish and remain confident in the belief that the clients that are meant to work with me, will cross my path and connect with me. This helps keep me grounded in a place of abundance and love versus scarcity and fear.
As I started my business, I was so impressed by the openness of other therapists and practice owners to share how they started, the successes, mistakes, and lessons. The local therapist community in the Denver metro area is incredible! If they don’t know, they are willing to connect you to someone who does and help however they can. I am forever grateful to those therapists for their advice, guidance and encouragement. Now, I feel like I am in a position where I can give back when there are other clinicians who are interested in opening their own practice. It’s my way of paying it forward.
There are still hard days, challenges, and things I don’t know, but that is all part of the journey. Despite all the ups and downs, I know that I’ve built something that reflects my values, my vision, and the kind of healing relationships I believe in.
As you know, we’re big fans of Lauren Timkovich, LCSW, PLLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I’m the founder of Lauren Timkovich, LCSW, PLLC, a private therapy practice based in Denver, Colorado with clients across CO, TX, VA, FL, and UT. My practice is rooted in one central belief: Connection changes everything. At the heart of it, my work is all about helping people reconnect – with themselves, with their partners, with their money, and with the kind of life they actually want to be living.
I’m a relational therapist who specializes in working with individuals and couples navigating anxiety, attachment wounds, relationship stress, and financial tension. A lot of the people I work with are high-achieving, driven, and on paper seem like they are doing great. Behind the scenes, they’re struggling with self-doubt, disconnection, and feeling stuck in the same painful patterns.
I help them untangle those patterns and get curious about the deeper story underneath. Why do you keep shutting down in conflict? Why does money bring up so much tension in your relationship? Why does success still feel like it’s not enough? These are the kinds of questions we explore together in session, not just to gain insight, but to actually shift how they move through their life and relationships.
Alongside my clinical work, I’ve developed a deep passion for business and now offer public speaking and workshops to organizations and leaders. My goal is to bridge the gap between mental health, leadership, and connection.
What sets me apart is how integrative and personalized my approach is. I pull from a wide range of evidence-based and experiential therapies—like Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), EMDR, psychodynamic, somatic work, and financial therapy. I often joke with clients that I am non-monogamous to any one therapeutic modality. I believe each person and situation is different, therefore therapy should be too.
I’m most proud of how aligned my practice is with who I am, not just as a therapist, but who I am as a person. I bring real-life experience and humanness into the therapy room. Therapy with me is warm, collaborative, and real. Clients often tell me they feel both deeply supported and gently challenged, and that’s exactly what I aim for. There are times I have laughed with my clients, cried, and celebrated the moments when something shifts and they realize, “I am changing my life”. That’s what I’m proud of. Not just being a therapist, but holding space for transformation in a way that’s bold, honest, and fully human.
When I first started the practice, the word vibrant stood out in my vision for my business. That is how I want therapy to feel for my clients – vibrant, alive and full of possibility. I’ve cultivated a space that’s modern, approachable, and deeply rooted in connection…with room for meaningful work, a little humor, and maybe even the occasional fashion chat.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
One of the biggest changes I see is that therapy is becoming more accessible, personalized, and diverse in how it’s delivered. The rise of telehealth during the pandemic opened the door for so many people to access care in ways that fit their lives. I think we’ll continue to see more hybrid models of telehealth and in-person sessions, more specialized niches, and more therapists creating practices that are built around who they serve best, rather than trying to be everything to everyone.
There’s also growing awareness around the connection between mental health and relational health. People are realizing that anxiety, burnout, and even financial stress are often symptoms of deeper relational patterns such as how we relate to ourselves, our partners, our money, and our work. That’s where I think therapy is headed, toward a more integrative, relational approach that doesn’t just focus on the individual, but looks at the whole system.
Another big shift I see is in how therapists are showing up professionally. Clients want to know who we are and what we stand for. Therapy is deeply personal and people want to work with someone they can truly connect with, someone who they feel actually gets them, and someone they trust can help them through their difficulties. Clients are becoming more informed, selective, and they’re seeking out therapists who can do real, in-depth work, not just surface-level symptom management. I think this shift is a good thing, not just for clients, but for therapists too. It allows us to show up more fully, build practices that reflect our values, and bring our whole selves into the work. When we’re allowed to be more human, creative, and aligned in our professional identities, therapy becomes more meaningful and impactful for everyone involved.
It’s an exciting time to be in this field and I can’t wait to see how it continues to evolve!
