Conversations with Matthew Jensen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Jensen.

Hi Matthew, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started in real estate working for a company called Housing Helpers. I quickly realized that working with people and helping them find something that is really important to them, like at home, really filled me up inside. However, I had to follow my own path and decided to go to the corporate sales route. I quickly realize this wasn’t for me as it felt like I was selling a commodity and what I really wanted to sell was myself and make connections with people. So I returned to real estate about 10 years ago and I haven’t looked back since. I’ve spent 9 years with WK Real estate. And I’ve been in the top 10 of the company for the past four years running. I’m a native of Boulder County, and I love engaging in my community. I am currently the longest sitting Boulder Chamber Of commerce Ambassador, I was one of Biz West‘s top 40 under 40 young professionals, and I participated in the community foundation leadership fellows program. I pride myself on being the community guy hosting great community based events, connecting people and businesses and raising money for important charities causes and nonprofits. I love where I live, and I love what I do.. I’ve been married to my wife Diane for 15 years, and we have an amazing 12-year-old daughter Natalie.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. I don’t know any realtor who has had a smooth road towards success. The best example I can give is a real estate career, and mine included. It’s like an airplane taking off. The airplane has to get enough speed and stays on the ground for quite a while before it takes off, but when it does, it soars. I remember sitting in my interview and the VP of the company asked me. Would I be willing to give this four years? I asked her what that meant. She said would I be sitting here four years from now after staying the course, no matter how many bumps in the road. I said yes in those first four years my marriage was tested. My business was tested. I had to get a second job and I wondered if I had made a mistake getting into real estate 2 to 3 open houses a week double that in social media posts touring as many properties as I possibly can. Real estate is a frustrating business because it’s the only business I found where you can ask the same question to 20 different agents and get 20 different answers. It’s maddening as a new agent.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I decided a couple of years ago. I wanted my business to look a specific way. So many other agents stand on a soapbox and pat themselves on the back. I didn’t want to be that guy. I wanted to connect with the community and a genuine and authentic way. That is why I created a series of events that aren’t about me. They are about community and making connections with others. I countdown the lighting of the Boulder star, I bring Santa Claus out for a holiday skate, I have a vision board party, March madness event. And this year will be celebrating Colorado‘s 150th birthday on the shores of Lake McIntosh in Longmont. Everyone is welcome and most events are fundraisers. I found if you’re going to touch your own horn might as well bring people together, make it fun,and raise awareness and money for a good cause.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I’m a big reader. And one of my favorite books is Tim Ferris four hour work week. Collaboration is key in this industry. As my business has grown, it’s become impossible for me to wear the same amount of hats. I’ve had to create strategic partnerships and build connections on multiple levels. From marketing to transaction coordination to event planning to lending to title work, I’ve built a powerful team to support all of my clients. I try to make myself as available as possible to all buyers and sellers, regardless of the size of the sale. And like Coach prime says I ain’t hard to find.
