Community Highlights: Meet Cassie Fitzpatrick of Mythical Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassie Fitzpatrick.

Hi Cassie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
After a stint in Ecuador working in my first love, Archeology, I realized that while it’s a fascinating career it wasn’t the path for me. Returning to the States briefly to pack everything up and find a new road, I headed to Asia and ended up in Hong Kong for seven years. While I had a lifetime of experiences throughout SE Asia, I still needed to find my thing, and returned state-side to figure it out. I knew that I wanted to work in the arts, but also knew that I didn’t need another degree that would simply become a hobby. It was while taking my toddler for a walk that it came to me.
Whoever first drew the animated lightbulb over the head has been through this Ah-ha experience. I remember vividly realizing that Interior Design was a viable profession and that it was my road ahead; and that memory still feels nothing less than a light-bulb moment. Knowing that I was starting my career later than the typical straight out of uni, and that I had a child (and another one on the way) to support, I have never stopped going since that moment 12 years ago; pushing myself to create a path that allowed me thrive in an environment I knew I was meant for.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I recently took a moment away, and had some time to reflect and write about my journey since opening my own company. One of the biggest take-aways was that I thought in starting my own company, the only thing I’d need to learn was how to run the financial side of the business – but this was far off the mark. There are so many things I didn’t realize go into running a business – creating a brand takes time, and one you really can’t define until you throw everything at the wall and see what works the best for you. When you’re creating your own journey rather than following someone else’s path, you need to find your own focus which is easier said than done. All of the details from creating welcome packs to finding the right social media person who gets you, take time you never accounted for when simply showing up and doing your job.

We’ve been impressed with Mythical Designs, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Mythical Designs is rooted in the sacred geometry of our universe. All design, whether it’s the path of a river or the towering pyramids seen around the world, follows patterns governed by nature – which is the belief of Mythical Designs that interiors should follow these same patterns.
My company recently released two additional design branches within the overarching company – Montiva Studios focusing on the rustic elegance of luxury mountain modern design and Rosewood Revivals – interiors rooted in midcentury soul. While Mythical Designs as a whole is versed and trained in all of today’s contemporary design styles, we felt it was important to also give voice to our two passions where we most excel!

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I haven’t ever had a mentor per se, however I have worked with some amazingly talented people over the years and have always tried to learn as much as I can from them. The relationships you form are priceless – while networking is good for business, its the people who you connect with over the years who will help you grow. I’ve worked with the same tile rep for ten years, and know I can always count on her for anything I need, and in turn will always support her as a vendor. I have a great friend who is in advertising, and while our businesses don’t really overlap, being able to commensurate over business ownership woes is essential in feeling what I’m going through isn’t secular, and while these connections may not seem to overlap they always lead you somewhere positive. These are the relationships every business owner needs to help them grow.
