Check Out Rachael Teufel’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachael Teufel.

Hi Rachael, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up baking in the kitchen with my Hungarian grandmother, but I didn’t discover my passion for cake decorating until later in life, when I sought a creative outlet from my day job. I always had artistic interests, so cake decorating seemed like the perfect activity after a long day working as a Physical Therapist. My passion for cake decorating began in 2001 with a few Wilton classes. I continued to educate myself by taking courses with top designers like Ron Ben-Israel, Colette Peters, and Marina Sousa. In 2006, I started my own company, Intricate Icings Cake Design, out of a commissary kitchen and eventually opened my own studio in 2009. After six years in the studio, I opted to scale back my company to focus solely on custom-designed, luxury wedding and event cakes, while continuing to share my cake knowledge through private classes and online Craftsy classes.

My work is now nationally recognized in both the wedding industry and the cake decorating community. I can be seen on episodes of Food Network Challenge and The Today Show as well as in the pages of magazines such as Brides, Martha Stewart Weddings, and The Knot. I have been awarded several top honors, including being named one of Martha Stewart Weddings’ top pastry pros in the country and Brides Magazine’s “Top 100 Bakeries”. Brides Magazine has also featured my cakes in the “50 Most Beautiful Wedding Cakes” and “America’s Prettiest Wedding Cakes”. Most recently, I was a guest judge on Buddy VS Duff Season 3 and Hulu’s Baker’s Dozen.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Over the past 19 years in business, I have encountered numerous challenges that have taught me valuable lessons about myself and my company. These experiences have significantly influenced the growth and evolution of my business. From becoming a mom and expanding our services with a team, to competing on reality TV shows and eventually downsizing to prioritize quality over quantity, each moment has played a crucial role in my journey.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a cake designer who specializes in luxury wedding cakes and experiential novelty cakes. My creations are not only visually stunning but also delicious.

I take great pride in the journey my business has undergone, starting as a hobby. I began by baking cakes at home for friends and family, then moved on to renting a commissary kitchen. Eventually, I opened a storefront and then built a dedicated kitchen in my home for crafting my edible art. I have certainly come a long way.

What sets me apart is my willingness and desire to think outside the box when it comes to cake design. I aim to create not just a cake, but an entire experience. I’ve designed cakes that hang, spin, shoot fire, and even pour champagne. My goal is to amaze viewers and hear them say things like, “There’s no way that is cake!”

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
No matter the occasion, people continue to celebrate life’s significant moments, and cakes add something special to those events. Every year, designs grow more personalized and inventive. Over my nearly 20-year career, I’ve witnessed countless cake trends rise and fade, and have even launched my own, the geode cake. Yet, the future of cake design remains delightfully unpredictable!
