We’re looking forward to introducing you to Dr. Angela Tran. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Angela, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
I have been a medical weight loss doctor since 2012, and fast forward to 2025, the most surprising thing I have learned about my patients is that no matter whether they needed to lose 15 lbs to over 100 lbs, they all shared this ONE thing. Weight seemed to be one of the top reasons that kept them from being their authentic self whether it was at work, at home with their partner and kids, or even amongst friends.
And after I helped them get to their health and weight goals, they all realized that it was never the number on the scale in the first place, but ultimately the journey of re-self-discovery led them to their happy, healthy selves. It was freedom they were looking for, not a certain weight.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Dr. Angela Tran, D.O. – Founder and CEO of Med-Fit Medical Weight Loss and we are a virtual medical weight loss practice helping women FINALLY break free from yo-yo dieting by using cutting edge medical intervention to create fast and safe predictable weight loss in a more sustainable way through understanding the mechanics of the metabolism beyond just diet and exercise.
While I was one of the early ones to be Board Certified in Obesity Medicine (in addition to my certification in Internal Medicine), my “real” certification is that I am now in the best shape of my life in my late 40s overcoming the real issues that my patients experience – pregnancy weight (40 lbs), gestational diabetes, ACL surgery requiring 8 months of physical therapy, and now perimenopause, hormone issues, and metabolic issues that are prominent in my family.
While I helped thousands of women lose weight since 2012 (BEFORE GLP1 injections came to market), now I really give my patients advanced medical tools while showing and modeling the way that it is absolutely possible to maintain a healthy weight without medication and being female dealing with age, genetics, and other fun things that come in this stage of life.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
In the first grade, my parents had applied for me to be in the gifted class and I was not accepted. Even though at the young age of 7, not being accepted meant I was not “smart enough”, not good enough. So I lived my entire education life thinking “I’m not smart; I just have to work harder than everyone else”.
I think patients are surprised to hear that, and I actually have incorporated those teachings into my curriculum as a medical weight loss. It is all about an identity shift, not just changing the habits that are needed for a healthy lifestyle.
Somewhere along the way, my patients were told they were “overweight” and therefore lived a life identifying with that. And when they start working with me, we cut that cord and they realize the weight comes off much faster.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Every day lol. Life is full of obstacles, and as we get older, and hopefully wiser, we realize that these obstacles are placed in your favor for a reason. I love the saying – “there is no rejection, only redirection.” And I remind myself that ultimately these obstacles only make you stronger, and I truly believe if you really want something, you will find a way. So that’s how I remind myself not to give up. It is just a muscle that we are building, breaking down, and building back up.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My best friend absolutely sees me for the real me and reminds me to keep pursuing my dreams no matter what others may think of me. It can be a harsh world showing up in a place where anyone and everyone has their own opinion about something, good or bad. We all tend to shy away because all we want to do is fit in. But my best friend knows me better that I don’t want to fit in. I want to stand out. I like to rock the boat. I like to speak my mind. I don’t like to take no for an answer. And in healthcare, I tend to bark when I feel it’s important to bark. And I think that’s why patients appreciate me so much because I definitely bring the new meaning of being an advocate for your own health and never stop just because you get one piece of information that may or may not support you.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I tell patients all the time that I don’t need to know what they look like to help them. There’s a deeper level to the work that I do that is beyond just diet and exercise, beyond blood work, hormones, beyond medications. It is the inner most layer of beliefs that I start to help patients rewire about themselves. Usually within a few minutes, I know what my patient’s patterns and behaviors are driven by. I pay very close to their language, what words they say, and I instantly know where their limitations are. I show them that being healthy is not about “doing”, it is about being. Who are you being when you are carrying out the day to day habits? I really go deep into not just the science and mechanics, but it is combined with mind, body, and spirit, and the knowledge I have gained is purely through doing such deep work over the past 13 years that this really isn’t something you can just learn from reading a book or research article. It is about connection, human connection.
