Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Romero.
Hi Justin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a designer, my story began as a middle school kid on the internet, where I found community among a group of netizens and artists who built E/N (everything/nothing) style websites, which often included web design and Adobe tutorials.
By the time I was 16, I’d successfully redesigned and developed the website for my high school in Lakewood, CO, and maintained a graphic and web design tutorial website that garnered thousands of visitors a week (this during a time of the internet, circa 2004, when many people were still dialing up rather than today’s internet where the majority of us having access in our pockets).
In 2010, I started freelancing professionally, and in 2019, I started the small boutique brand design studio called BisonSatellite.
Over the last 6 years, BisonSatellite has designed and strategized creative brand identities for small businesses across the US, including the Zarlengo Foundation, Nova Mente BJJ, Paisano Realty, Inc., MAKfam, and Fireweed Cannabis Co., to name a few.
Today, a passion for expression, a unique perspective, and a stringent dedication to designs that *work* have helped me and BisonSatellite build brands that accomplish their visual and strategic goals effectively and creatively.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
By definition, the process of creativity is never really a smooth road. Finding the right balance between what is unique or “creative” with something familiar enough to be recognized or appreciated is always a journey with unexpected turns.
The biggest struggles, like any designer, have been developing and creating experiences for clients that feel inclusive and collaborative, rather than the typical “just trust me because I’m a designer” attitude many brand experts have.
Instead, developing a process that brings everyone to the same table and allows me to seamlessly join a metaphoric game-already-in-progress has been both the biggest struggle and has had the biggest ROI. It’s not easy, but getting everybody (especially myself) to read from the same “playbook” has been key.
As you know, we’re big fans of BisonSatellite. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
BisonSatellite is a brand design studio in Denver. We work with service businesses and nonprofits that feel boxed in by how people see them and want to show up with more purpose in the market.
We focus on identity design and strategy, where we create logos based on clear goals and market research. Then we keep your brand steady with clear design, simple messages, and effective storytelling. This builds the reputation, value, and experiences you want for your clients and customers, internal team and employees, and even new customer or employee onboarding.
You’ve seen brands that stay consistent, organized, and plan well. BisonSatellite turns your brand into one of those.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
