Hidden Gems: Meet Erika Baum of Denver Attachment Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Baum.

Hi Erika, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Erika Baum’s path to founding Denver Attachment Counseling has been anything but ordinary. Her story weaves together entrepreneurship, personal growth, and a deep calling to help others heal.

Before becoming a therapist, Erika built and sold multiple successful businesses—including two salons and an e-commerce company—by her mid-thirties. Yet beneath the surface of her success, she felt a growing pull toward something more meaningful: understanding why people suffer and how they heal.

Her journey into counseling began as both personal and professional exploration. Having grown up around trauma and instability, Erika became fascinated by the ways people adapt to pain—and how those patterns continue to shape adult relationships and emotional lives. That curiosity led her to earn a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and pursue advanced training in EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy, and trauma-informed care. She also integrates Nonviolent Communication principles to help clients build healthier, more compassionate ways of relating to themselves and others.

Through Denver Attachment Counseling, Erika helps adults untangle from old emotional and relational patterns so they can live more connected, peaceful, and empowered lives. Her approach blends neuroscience, mindfulness, and what she calls skillful living—a modern, secular application of Buddhist principles emphasizing awareness, compassion, and personal responsibility.

At the heart of Erika’s work is a deep belief that our imperfections are what make us beautifully human. She embraces the truth that growth is not linear, and that we are all walking this path together—sometimes stumbling, sometimes soaring, but always learning. Humility and authenticity guide both her practice and her life.

Erika’s work has grown beyond the therapy room. She’s the author of Making Therapy Work, a workbook designed to help clients engage more deeply in their healing process, and continues to write and teach about emotional healing and conscious living.

Outside of her professional life, Erika is a wife, mother, and proud mom to a cat and two dogs, finding grounding and joy in the same practices she encourages in others—connection, presence, and compassion.

Her philosophy is simple: healing doesn’t have to take forever—it just has to go deep enough to create real change. Through her writing, workshops, and one-on-one work, Erika continues to walk alongside others—imperfectly, honestly, and wholeheartedly—toward wholeness, authenticity, and a more skillful way of living.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—and honestly, I wouldn’t want it to be. The hardest seasons of my life have been the ones that shaped me most deeply, both as a person and as a therapist.

Like many people who work in trauma, I didn’t come to this field by accident. I grew up around instability and emotional chaos, and for a long time, I thought strength meant self-reliance and control. Learning to soften, to trust, and to be present with my own pain has been a lifelong process—and it’s one that continues to this day.

Starting a private practice also came with its own set of challenges. Balancing the demands of entrepreneurship while being a mom, wife, and human myself hasn’t always been easy. There were seasons of burnout, self-doubt, and moments of wondering if I was really making a difference. But each challenge has humbled me and taught me something vital about grace, perseverance, and the power of authenticity.

I’ve learned that healing—whether personal or professional—isn’t linear. It’s messy, beautiful, and full of lessons we don’t always choose. The same imperfection that once made me question my worth is now what connects me most deeply to others. That’s what keeps me grounded and grateful for the work I get to do every day.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Denver Attachment Counseling was created with a simple but powerful mission: to help people heal from the past so they can live more connected and peaceful lives today. I specialize in working with adults who’ve experienced complex or relational trauma, and who often find themselves repeating the same emotional or relational patterns even after years of traditional talk therapy.

My approach blends EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy, Nonviolent Communication, and trauma-informed care within an attachment-based framework. I focus on helping clients understand why they react the way they do—then guiding them toward rewiring those patterns at the root, not just managing symptoms.

What sets Denver Attachment Counseling apart is the balance between depth and practicality. Healing doesn’t have to take forever, but it does need to go deep enough to create real change. My style is direct, compassionate, and deeply human—I don’t believe in “venting therapy” or surface-level work. Instead, I help clients get to the core of what’s keeping them stuck, with both science and soul.

I’m most proud of how the brand has evolved beyond a private practice into a space for growth, education, and community. Through my workbook Making Therapy Work, ongoing workshops, and soon-to-launch retreats and groups, I aim to make healing tools more accessible and experiential—helping people not just talk about change, but actually live it.

At its heart, Denver Attachment Counseling stands for authenticity, wholeness, and skillful living. I want readers to know that therapy here isn’t about perfection—it’s about learning to live with more awareness, compassion, and courage, one honest step at a time.

What are your plans for the future?
Looking ahead, my vision for Denver Attachment Counseling and my work as a whole is expanding beyond one-on-one therapy into more community, teaching, and collaboration. I believe healing is amplified when people feel supported and connected, so much of what I’m building now reflects that.

In the near future, I’m launching small group intensives, workshops, and retreats that weave together trauma healing, mindfulness, and Buddhist-informed “skillful living” principles in a grounded, accessible way.

I’m also continuing to write and teach—expanding on my workbook Making Therapy Work and developing my next book, which explores personal growth and awakening in everyday life.

Ultimately, my goal isn’t just to grow a business—it’s to help shape a movement toward more ethical, embodied, and skillful healing in the world. The vision is big, but the heart behind it stays simple: to keep walking this path with humility, courage, and purpose—and to help others do the same.
