Hi OSCIFY, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
I believe that it’s the most basic of all elements that reset us. Water as flows over the rounded stones on a river. Wind swirling autumn leaves in circles. An unusual bird or insect passing by. Moments with friends and family. Campfires. Classic cars and hot rods. Home cooked meals. Cycling. Drawing and painting. Listening and creating music. Rhythm and rhyme patterns. The poetry of life is where it’s at!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m an artist, an MC, producer, and I sing and play a few instruments very questionably!
Stylistically, I’ve done a lot of underground golden era style boombap and new school rap, but have also worked in several other genres including rock, folk and experimental psychedelia as well as many styles of instrumentals.
Over the years, I’ve recorded and performed with several groups, including Magnificent Wingspan, True Vintage, Heart Break Kids / Purple Elks, Mad Osc, Are You Serious, and others.
OSCIFY is a musical handle that I created several eons before these wild modern times. At first, it was all just unfocused beautiful chaos. Eventually, a purpose and mission emerged and we’ve been trucking along tough ever since!
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Well one day, way back when I was a very young man I had a formative and truly revelatory experience I would later refer to as “Realizations of Everlasting Oneness”. In this moment, I saw that life had very different plans than whatever I had imagined before. I began to have a slight inkling of the power of a ripple, but still knowing nothing. Before that moment I felt alone in the universe. Afterwards , I felt united with the universe as a conduit for its power.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Back then, in the early days, I believed success was owed to me. Later on, after living through the coldest seasons with no heat, or water, or electric, it truly taught me much humility, especially when I realized that I was still blessed to be living indoors.
As a youth I was in many very difficult situations, but I am beyond grateful for the loving people around me who helped me get through those times to where I am today.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
My belief is that many things are simply the result of an unstoppable gravitational flow, and after all this time I do feel the same about my drive and motivation to create this music. It’s like an infinite energy field waiting to be tapped into.
I’ve had people tell me that my music has changed their lives, but sometimes I’ve felt my earlier work didn’t always serve the values of health and wellbeing.
I write about my life and it’s not always perfect, but these days, I do work on promoting a slightly healthier lifestyle in my songs and brand than I used to.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
For me, peace and contentment are found in quiet moments. Hanging with my people, meditating in nature, running and jumping, playing music and letting the notes rise.
It’s amazing how when one is unsatisfied with life, nothing seems fun or enjoyable. Conversely, when one lives with an open heart and gratefulness, even the most seemingly mundane moments can be grand and enlightening.
To me, it all starts and ends with gratitude for the moment we are in.
