Today we’d like to introduce you to Lamarcus Caradine.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Lamarcus Caradine, and I’m a Sports Rehab Chiropractor. I was born in the small town of Eupora, Mississippi. My chiropractic journey began during my college years at Belhaven University, a small college where I received my only offer to play football. To be honest, I was somewhat clueless about my future when I started there.
I played football for four years, and it all began to change during my junior year. After a challenging sophomore year, I was eager to return to the field as one of the top receivers in Division III football. I was excited about the potential coaching change, hoping it would lead to more wins.
However, everything took a turn one day in the weight room. While lifting weights at about 70-80% of my maximum, my technique was poor. I kept increasing the weight, feeling confident. I decided to attempt a deadlift of 450 to 480 pounds. As I lifted, I heard a snap in my lower back and immediately dropped the weight. I could still move, so I thought I was fine.
That night, I woke up in excruciating pain and could barely move. My roommate, Rydarrius Bowie, helped me out of bed. I initially thought it was just stiffness and didn’t say anything. I tried to keep moving, but my condition worsened. I convinced myself it wouldn’t affect my performance, and I continued to play.
On the first day of spring ball, I noticed I was moving much slower than usual. I was getting caught by players I normally outran. This decline affected my mentality, leading to dropped passes and increased anxiety on the field. I played my first two games of the season, but I was not the same player. I began to lose reps with the starting team in practice, and my friend Joey Walden took over that spot. Despite his success, Joey continued to support me, keeping me positive, but I desperately wanted to be out there.
Determined to regain my form, I ramped up my rehab efforts. Weeks passed, but I wasn’t improving. My athletic trainer, Macie, approached me and said, “Lamarcus, you have not been progressing in your rehab. We may need to send you to a chiropractor.” She explained that we had exhausted all options, but at least we could try this route.
As a sports medicine major, I had never considered seeing a chiropractor, but I was willing to try anything to return to the field and feel like myself again. I visited a chiropractor who assured me I would feel better in about four weeks. Skeptical, I expressed my frustration, saying I had cried almost every day and tried nearly everything. I was okay with just wanting to feel like myself again, even if I couldn’t return to the same level of play.
After about two weeks of treatment, I started to feel significantly better. At first, I thought chiropractic care was similar to physical therapy because of the various modalities he used. I asked my friend, Standish Dyson, to time me while running, and to my surprise, I felt faster than I had before the injury.
Soon after, I began working with Aaron Woods and Laron Bennitt, two elite trainers who helped me improve my speed even more. I gradually found myself again and made my way back to the field. This chiropractor changed my life, allowing me to play five more years of professional football. Inspired by my experience, I am now dedicated to helping others in the same way.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No. I was playing Professional Football while also being in school. I had to take a quarter off every 4 quarters while I was playing so I can dedicate my time to playing and practicing. I also had exams while I was playing. Not only was in hard in some classes, but I had to find housing when I returned to school. It takes 14 quarters to graduate. You can only imagine the stress of being in a doctorate program while also playing Professional Football. I wanted to learn as much as I can playing and going to the trainers and learning what we the Pro’s do to get back healthy fast so I could bring this to the real world. It was a lot of hard work and grinding knowing that any day I could be cut, but also studying for boards as well as exams.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
