Andre, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I think we are somewhere between walking the path and wandering. We recently took on a manager to help guide us forward, but the landscape of music and art seems to be changing more and more rapidly these days. It can be hard to feel like you’re sticking to the path, when the path itself is changing.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Andre Whitehair Hardyway and I’m one the vocalists and bassists for Denver metal band Goat Hill Massacre. We play heavy music that swings anywhere from groove metal to technical death metal and we have a great time doing it. Goat Hill Massacre started back in 2014 and we’ve had a great time bringing the massacre to stages across the western US ever since. We’ve put out 4 albums over that time with our 5 album in the works right now.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
This is a fun and difficult question to think on. In the context of the band, I think a lot of our bonds have come down to reliability and being able to manage interpersonal connections. Not showing up on time, tearing others down, compromising our external relationships, those are some of the greatest challenges we’ve had with folks in the past. I think being able to restore that comes down to having those hard conversations on what we can do to move forward together and sticking to those things that are agreed upon. Sometimes it works with folks and other times it requires us to move on.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering teaches you how to pick yourself back up. Success is great and you can learn what to continue to do when you succeed, but getting knocked down teaches you resilience, strategies to bounce back, and that is incredibly powerful.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I think the biggest lie is being able to get anywhere with hard work alone. The old adage of it isn’t what you know, but who you know is incredibly relevant to this industry.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
The story that I hope people tell about us when we’re gone is that we put on a good show and played music that people enjoyed. We have a lot of fun with our music, both performing and creating it, and we hope that that translates to the folks who enjoy us.
