Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Kaitlyn Fox of Littleton

Kaitlyn Fox shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Kaitlyn, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I think a lot of people look at photography as an easy job. They think it’s just a “point and shoot” situation and forget about all the logistics. Photography is kind of like driving a car. Anyone can pick up a camera, and have it in automatic mode; you can take pictures of anything you want and opt to edit or not. Just like driving an automatic car. However, professional photographers know the ins and outs of their gear. For example, what happens to a photo if your ISO is too high? Photos get grainy. You need to know lighting, camera settings, etc. Much like driving a manual car, you’re solely in control of what happens. We also do more than just take photos, photographers also spend countless hours editing. We are meticulous with each image; editing out blemishes, distractions from the background, you name it. We also need to understand posing, directing groups big and small, timeline prep for weddings, business management, social media marketing, etc. There’s so much more than just pointing and shooting a camera and throwing an Instagram filter on a photo.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kaitlyn (Kait) Fox. I’m a happily married mom of two who absolutely adores my job. My grandfather was a photographer and from an early age, I saw the beauty in capturing life. I saw early on the art of simply noticing and I think that has served me well in my career. I’m an introvert and have fallen in love with capturing the small moments that often get missed. A kiss on the cheek. A hand on the knee. A tear wiped away. I enjoy being a fly-on-the-wall and documenting not only the big moments but the seemingly little ones, as well. While I do believe it’s important to capture more posed and guided moments, I love a session where kids are all0wed to just be kids. I want to capture people as they are.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My husband Tyler. He has always been my biggest cheerleader. He was the one who purchased me my first DSLR. He was also the one who encouraged me to take the leap and become a photographer full-time. He has always pushed me to be the best version of myself not only when it comes to photography but also the every day things like motherhood. Anytime I start to doubt myself, he is the first to point out what I’m capable of.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one thing to my younger self, I think I would say that I’m capable of more than I think I am. I’ve always struggled with self-worth and anxiety. These crippling beliefs of, “I’m not good enough,” have held me back from so much. I wish my younger self knew just how strong she has always been and just how good life will get.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
I sure try to make sure that my public version of me is the real version. It’s so hard when we live in a social media obsessed time. I don’t post a ton of non-business-related things on social media, but I do try to share things that talk about mental health issues as I have severe general anxiety, depression and ADHD. I think it’s important that we talk about mental health because when we don’t, those of us who struggle with it feel even more isolated. On the flip side, I also love to share dark humor as it’s a huge part of who I am. I’m a goofy, quirky and awkward individual and now that I’m in my 30’s, I try to embrace it. I want people to have an idea of who I am and know that it’s ok not to just put on a highlight reel front.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I understand all too well that life goes fast. It’s unpredictable and can change at any moment. We live in a time where everything is so fast paced. I’m grateful to be able to admire and capture the little things. When it all comes down to it, the little things are ultimately what make up the big things. If we can learn to slow down and take it all in, I think we will all be able to appreciate life on a greater scale.
