Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaila Coleman.
Hi Kaila , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started with film photography in high school and fell in love with the art form. I have been taking photos since 2015 and started publishing my own work in 2020. I had worked as a contract photographer for local theatres and families, but didn’t start publishing fine art until the pandemic.
I had to really overcome comparison and believe that my work was worth being in the public sphere, and that took a lot of convincing. I had a long-term residency at the Walnut Gallery in Longmont and have been featured in shows from California to Massachusetts.
Since then, I have been featured in Connecticut and continue to freelance while finishing my law degree.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was hard to believe that my art was worth being seen. I was really convinced that my work had to be objectively marketable, and that was a focus that I had to walk away from to love my work again. The best pieces I have published or entered into a show are the ones I am most afraid to show because they represent a vulnerability that really only I know about. It is still so hard to believe that others will love the work as much as I do, and even if they don’t, that’s okay.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a black and white fine art photographer. My goal with pieces is for people to feel like they are in them. I really believe that a picture can speak a thousand words, and I want those words to be an image that sucks you in and tells you a whole story.
The image I love the most is one that is hanging in my apartment, it’s a five-foot print of a small alley in London that I took off the side of a bus. The thing I love the most is that the size and way there is movement makes it feel like you are walking in the image when you pass by. I like to believe that is what makes my work different. It doesn’t just show movement, it invites you to move in it and with it.
