We recently had the chance to connect with Emily Day and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I love this question! I’m a big believer in staying curious and following nudges – maybe that means I’m a lifelong wanderer! I think there are key moments in life that you can look back on and trace the ways they shaped the rest of your path. Wandering your way through life allows you to pick up on more of the opportunities that can turn into some of those key moments.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Emily Day, the founder and lead designer of Good Day Design Co., a boutique studio specializing in brand identity and web design that blend strategy with thoughtful creativity.
I’ve always had a love for creating and an eye for the little details that make things beautiful and meaningful. After studying marketing and graphic design (and spending a few years at a design agency), I realized that branding is where all my favorite things come together — creativity, problem-solving, and working with people.
That’s how Good Day Design Co. came to life. I get to help business owners bring their ideas to life through thoughtful, intentional design that truly reflects who they are. I’m a big believer that great design starts with listening — understanding what makes each business special — and then building something beautiful and lasting from there.
On my to-do list, you will generally find a combination of 1-2 brand identity projects, a website in the works, and internal creative brainstorming.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I grew up thinking of myself as a shy, reserved person. I liked to be quiet and operate behind the scenes. Being called on in class made my heart stop, and the idea of speaking in front of people made my stomach turn. “Shy” was both a feeling and a label I carried through my teens.
Then I saw self-confidence modeled in a new way when I met who is now my mother-in-law. She’s a ball of positivity with enthusiasm to spare and a leader in her career. Seeing her, I realized I didn’t have to be bold, loud, or flashy to “take up space.”
I could lean into my strengths—listening, observation, empathy, optimism—and define what being confident meant for me. What came as a huge surprise to me is that trusting this confidence led me to business ownership and allowed me to run a successful design studio – a role I could have never imagined at one point in my life.
I’d love to tell my younger self: you will find self-confidence that is completely your own, and it will stick with you for the rest of your life… but, fair warning, you may never fully warm up to karaoke.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I’ve always wanted to avoid looking back and wishing I’d done things differently—at least when it comes to the big stuff. Should I move? Stay in the same career? Live closer to family? Become a parent?
At some point, I realized that every choice means not choosing all the other options—and that’s okay. There’s rarely one “right” path. Following your gut and committing to your decision is usually the best thing you can do. Letting go of the fear of regret and embracing the path I’m on has given me freedom, especially in choosing business ownership over the traditional career ladder. And the best part? You can always change your mind.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
Anyone who makes you want to be a better person just by being in their orbit.
For a big-name example—okay, yes, she’s definitely a powerhouse too—but I really admire Reese Witherspoon. She seems like the kind of person who shows up as the same version of herself whether you’re a co-star, a fan, a friend, or a business partner. She leads with her bubbly personality and kindness, and I think that inspires others to do the same. That’s the best kind of influence a person can have, in my opinion.
In my day-to-day life, I’m drawn to friends who have that same effect—the ones who light you up just by being around them. You can feel their love, support, and genuine kindness, not just toward you but toward everyone they meet. That kind of energy is rare and incredibly valuable.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
Simply – I hope to be remembered as kind, thoughtful, and caring.
