Conversations with Dillon Larson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dillon Larson.

Hi Dillon , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Foundations Incorporated was started off the heals of a terrible experience leasing my properties to another sober living company. I found myself at 42 part-time retired and was compelled to ensure that individuals with substance abuse disorders got the proper care and programing that would give them the best opportunity to maintain long-term sobriety. As a member in the recovery community myself I knew that the only way to make sure this would happen would be to start the program myself. I found a wonderful partner Angela Schulz and an amazing Director of Operations Danny Murphy and we were off to the races. We currently have 12 homes in 6 cities with 142 beds, an intensive outpatient facility and a community center in Aurora to serve those in need and to provide a higher level of care. I am so proud of the culture we have created within our program and to see our clients recover from the deadly disease of substance abuse is the highlight of my day. I love seeing families reunited, purpose restored and hope in the eyes where there was none before.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Building this company has been the greatest challenge aside from getting sober myself. I had no experience in this field and had to learn everything from scratch. Not only did I have to convert seven of my own homes into the new business but I also financially supported the company for almost 1.5 years before we were making money. While building the company I was still running a real estate brokerage and managing my real estate investments. Every waking moment was dedicated to this mission. I could not have done this without the support of my amazing girlfriend, family and friends who supported me the entire time. Angela and I worked full-time without pay because we believed in the product we were bringing to the market and that as long as we continued to do the next right thing we would always get taken care of. The missing link was Danny Murphy and once he came into the picture it catapulted our company into where it is today which is one of the largest and most advanced sober living companies in the state.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As I’ve found success it has spurred my true purpose in this life which is to use my resources towards helping others and the environment. I have a Bachelor’s of Science degree and have a strong connection with the natural world. I am so excited for the projects I am working on right now which is increasing the population of many of our species that are in decline, including turtles, bees and butterflies. One thing that sets me apart from most people I interact with is that I believe in the power of envisioning where I want to be and not placing any limit on that end goal. I believe anything is possible and no dream is too big to dream. When I think about my future I do not place a cap on it. I think of where I want to be and what I want to do and I share that with others and when the time is right the right people are put into my life. I am not one of those people who respond to life with reasons why I can’t get to where I want to be or that my life is not ideal because of someone else or circumstances. I am responsible for my own happiness and success in this life. I am fortunate to be alive today and it’s all thanks to my recovery.

What matters most to you? Why?
Hands down my recovery program. Until age 27 I was drinking and drugging everyday and didn’t see a way out. I was blessed to have found recovery from addiction and have been sober for almost 18 years. The reason it matters most to me is that without my recovery being the most important thing to me I would not be living this amazing life I do. Most importantly I am happy and proud of who I am today. I am at peace in this world and that’s something I never had before I found recovery.
