Hi Hilary, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Who are you learning from right now?
As always, I’m learning from people in all walks of life. I use an AI-designed reading and study program that guides me through research on conflict and conflict management. I dive into the tools created to help children regulate their emotions—because honestly, there’s far more support for kids than for adults in that space! I also learn from the characters in fiction and historical novels—how they handle challenges, reframe moments, and grow. And I learn from watching those I admire navigate the complexities of today’s world, often with the public eye on them.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Hilary Blair, CEO and Co-Founder of ARTiculate: Real & Clear — a Denver-based communication firm where artistry meets leadership. As an actor-turned-coach and keynote speaker, I help leaders and teams unlock their most powerful presence, especially when conversations get messy, charged, or high-stakes. I am a drama teacher who used to put the drama in and, now I take it out.
At ARTiculate: Real&Clear, we believe friction isn’t something to fix — it’s energy to harness. Our signature framework, Fruitful Friction®, transforms tension into traction by teaching leaders to navigate the “messy middle” of communication rather than avoid it. It’s where clarity, creativity, and collaboration spark real progress.
What makes our work unique is the fusion of performance discipline and executive coaching. We draw from the stage — voice, body, and presence — to build trust and impact in the boardroom. I’ve spent over two decades coaching executives, entrepreneurs, and global teams to communicate with authenticity, courage, and connection.
Right now, I’m deeply immersed in expanding the Fruitful Friction® Certification, training a new wave of coaches and leaders to apply these tools across industries. Whether in leadership labs, keynotes, or one-on-one sessions, my mission remains the same: to help people show up fully — human, clear, and ready to engage.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
Oh, thinking about this, I realize I’m still working on some of those old thoughts! One thing that has shifted is that as a child I believed I was “too much” – too much energy, intensity, ideas, emotional expression, and innovation. Now I have realized I need to surround myself with the right folks and be me.
Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
I was surprised when I was asked to create an event celebrating a high-profile figure at a high-profile occasion—and at first, my ideas weren’t even in the mix. Then came the ask: they wanted to hear what I had in mind. They listened. Together, with a strong and creative team, we built something powerful together. That experience reminded me—when everyone has a voice, teamwork and co-creativity truly win.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I’m deeply committed to Fruitful Friction® — the belief that friction isn’t the enemy of progress; it’s the source of it. Our culture so often defaults to conflict or avoidance, but there’s a whole land of possibility in between — where, with the right tools, we can connect, be in relationship, and navigate our differences for the benefit of everyone involved.
That commitment takes time — because changing how we handle friction means rethinking how we lead, listen, and collaborate. I’ll keep at it as long as it takes to help more people recognize that our differences aren’t barriers; they’re the very energy that fuels innovation and trust.
