Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Joy White of Northern Colorado

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Joy White. Check out our conversation below.

Joy, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Outside of work, I have been doing tons of outdoor activities and no screen time. When you have your own business, it can sometimes feel like you are always working. Being outside in nature really helps center your energy. I actually walk or bike to most of my errands, and set a very small windows of time to use my phone. These practices enable me to be more present with myself and my family, and leave more time for things I enjoy.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’ve been in the beauty industry for almost 25 years! Saying that makes me wonder where all the time went-however when I look back at my career I am proud of where I am today. I’ve had to pivot more times than i can count.

When 2020 hit, I was just settling in to living in California and transferring my business there. Since with my industry you had to close down indefinitely, I moved back to Colorado to try to make it all work. When things started shifting towards the end of the year, I ended up closing my business and started a family.

5 years and two kids later, I am starting to accept a small clientele again. I started offering home services and have become more flexible with scheduling. I also started offering more services like tarot readings, manicures and essential oils.

When I started in this field way back in 1999, everything was so different. I don’t think I ever could have imagined how things would change however I learned one thing is always consistent-change. After my first child I started to experience some health challenges and at points I wasn’t sure if I would be able to work in the field anymore. But after taking time off to slow down, heal and focus on my family and health I’m back to being able to work in a field I love.

One thing that I love to bring to my business is honestly, authenticity and efficiency. I will always help when I can and I only accept clients that fit in with my authentic self.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
Sometimes with work I would see over 30 clients a day. That is back breaking work-mentally and physically. That would carry over into my personal life, leaving me drained and unable to do basic self care for myself. I am so thankful for the many years of seeing so many clients as it brought my skills to an entirely new level-one that not many people will achieve. However now I truly focus on myself and my family, and only take clients when time permits. It is also why when I reopened my business-I started fresh with a new name-The Occasional Beauty.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Hindsight is always 20/20, however I would say to my younger self that everything always works out. Put yourself first, and do everything you can to lower stress.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Sometimes! I think everyone has different masks that they take out into the world. However, most people assume I am a huge extrovert. The closest to me know that I’m actually an introvert and would gladly sit in silence for days at a time, I read insane amounts of books and I love to be alone.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If immortality were real, what would you build?
I would build a compound for all my family and friends, gardens that can feed everyone and the ability to never have to leave the property. Self sustainability is something I would love to build and maintain.
