We recently had the chance to connect with Lindsay Caputo and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Lindsay, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Have you ever been glad you didn’t act fast?
Definitely! Recently, I had an audition where I could have rushed to try and submit it immediately and risk the quality or wait a few hours until I actually had enough time and assure it went as I wanted. When it comes to auditions, it’s usually best to get them in as soon as possible, but in the end, you want quality over speed. When I finally did the audition, I was able to relax and play it very naturally. I ended up booking that job. Not only that, but the client let me know that she specifically liked the little details I focused on to make it authentic.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Lindsay Caputo and I’m an actor, voice over artist, and singer based out of Denver, Colorado. My focus is film and tv, but I also enjoy the commercial side of acting. While my character types vary quite a bit, I often trend towards the focused, driven, passionate characters like attorneys, CEOs, law enforcement, etc.
When it comes to voice over, I do everything from narration, commercials, animation, video games, and a bunch more. Voice over is a craft I had been inadvertently preparing for most of my life because I always loved singing, imitating voices I heard, and trying out new sounds.
It’s actually funny how acting ended up as my career. I started off singing and absolutely loved that. I was also interested in pursuing acting at the time, but was intimidated by it, so put it off. Years later, acting still piqued my interest, but I continued to avoid it and instead, went into voice over. This was somewhat fortuitous as I ended up thoroughly enjoying this way of using my voice, though acting still called to me. However, one of the best ways to become great at voice over is to take acting lessons, so….I ended up taking acting lessons and low and behold…I absolutely loved it.
With acting, I enjoy all the work that comes with learning the craft and achieving goal after goal. This is saying something because I’ve never loved the “journey” of basically anything! Suffice it to say, I feel extremely fortunate that I was led into this.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Ironically, or perhaps not, I was a more carefree, creative, version of myself. I didn’t think so much, I didn’t consider what was the “correct” way to comport myself, etc etc.
At some point in my teens, I became aware that I didn’t feel like I was being myself; basically, I didn’t feel like “me”. So, I started working on that and working on it and working on it…
Between that and finding, some life experience, and becoming an actor, I find myself becoming more free by the day. I’ve learned to trust myself and to follow my intuition. I’ve also learned that what makes me uniquely me is actually my greatest strength.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one thing to my younger self, it would be this: You are one of the strong ones. Take a breath, trust yourself, and keep your focus on your own path.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I admire anyone who focuses on being a good person, both to themself and to those around them, and does what they need to do, no more, no less. Actual “power” comes from sincere confidence, which doesn’t need to be grandiose. Don’t get me wrong, it can be at times, but I admire those who simply do what they need to do per the circumstances.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope that people remember me for being kind and passionate. I hope they remember me for being morally decent and not being afraid to stand up for what I believe is correct. And I hope people remember me for bucking the norm and following my heart, whether it’s the way I dress, my career choices, or what have you.
