Today we’d like to introduce you to James Mitchell.
James, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
From the moment we got married, we knew we wanted to be intentional and live a remarkable life together. What we didn’t know was how. There weren’t many roadmaps for couples who wanted to design their marriage with the same care they brought to their dreams, especially entrepreneur couples.
We started where we knew, premarital counseling. Angela is a counselor, after all. But it quickly became clear that traditional counseling was built to unpack the past, not prepare couples for the future. As newlyweds, our past wasn’t the problem. We needed a way to build forward.
So, as any entrepreneur would, we created our own solution.
For the past 15 years, we’ve used an annual marriage retreat that we created to clarify our vision, align on strategy, and deepen our connection. That practice became the foundation for everything else, because success only matters if your relationship is strong enough to enjoy it.
Early on, Angela worked as a school counselor while James built businesses, including a career in real estate and real estate investing. About seven years in, Angela said something that stopped us both:
“I’ve never known you to be happy in your career.”
At first, it stung. Then it landed, hard. Because it was true.
That moment sparked a shift toward purpose-driven work and a shared mission to bring more love into the world. The transition wasn’t easy. Working together challenged everything we thought we knew. For years, our life worked because we had clearly defined roles—James as the entrepreneur, Angela as the anchor. Learning how to collaborate as equals was humbling, uncomfortable, and deeply formative.
We committed to becoming world-class at this work—investing in coaching, mentorship, and deep personal growth. The first six years were rough. Then, during a one-year sabbatical in Peru (2024–2025), everything clicked. We finally learned how to honor each other’s expertise, work together with trust, and turn our differences into rocket fuel.
During that year, we wrote a book and launched a podcast—both called Married and Magnetic. We clarified our mission: to help entrepreneurs stay happily married.
We’ve never met an entrepreneurial couple who dreamed of building a successful business at the expense of their marriage. And it doesn’t have to be that way.
Entrepreneurs face unique pressures, and their marriages are often underserved. Because we figured out what works in our own relationship, it became clear that helping others do the same is the most meaningful work we could ever do.
What’s possible is more than success.
It’s love, connection, intimacy—and a life that actually feels as good as it looks.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning, we faced all the classic entrepreneurial challenges with James as a Realtor and Angela with an anchor job as a counselor: inconsistent income, mental overload, and the constant tug-of-war between growing a business and being present at home—especially while raising three kids and building our first layer of financial stability.
But the biggest challenge came later—when we chose to work together as “couplepreneurs”.
We had both been successful leaders in our own worlds, and without clearly defined roles in the beginning (a rookie mistake, in hindsight), things got crunchy. Really crunchy.
We found ourselves bumping heads over decisions, processes, even communication styles. And it wasn’t just frustrating, it was quite painful. The work we loved was starting to cost us the marriage we loved more.
It reached a point where we had a serious conversation about walking away from the business if it meant protecting our relationship. Our marriage is always the non-negotiable.
That moment of reckoning ended up being a turning point. We slowed down, reset, and committed to doing things differently. Defining clear roles, diving into deeper communication, and giving each other more trust in our unique brilliance. That’s when things finally started to click.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Love Intentionally, we help entrepreneurial couples build thriving marriages that fuel extraordinary lives.
We’re not just coaches. We’re a married entrepreneurial couple ourselves and have used every tool we offer because they worked for us, which gives us a unique lens and real-world empathy for the couples we serve. Our secret sauce is our two-on-two approach: Angela brings 20+ years of experience as a licensed counselor, and James brings thousands of hours as a transformational coach working with men and entrepreneurs. Together, we help other married founders navigate the dual challenges of growing a business and growing together in love.
We specialize in what we call a Marriage Operating System, or a recipe. A clear framework and set of tools that help couples stay connected, aligned, and deeply fulfilled, especially when business is demanding. Through peer-to-peer masterminds, 2-on-2 intensives, and digital programs, we equip couples with the strategies to eliminate tension at home and create the kind of intimacy, vision, and clarity that spills over into every area of their lives.
What sets us apart? We’re one of the only coaching companies in the country specifically focused on helping entrepreneurial couples stay happily married. That is to say any relationship where at least one person is an entrepreneur. Most programs either focus on the marriage or the business. We do both, because for founders, those worlds are inextricably linked.
We’re especially proud of our book Married and Magnetic, which is one of fewer than five books written for and by entrepreneurial couples, and the only one (we’ve found) that focuses purely on how to build a marriage that makes everything else in life feel magnetic that doesn’t use a religious system.
At the end of the day, we believe that when your home is thriving, your business will follow. And when couples learn to love intentionally, they don’t just build companies, they build legacies.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to us is being the change we want to see in the world. We believe that when there’s more love and connection in a relationship, it frees up time, energy, and creativity to flow into the endeavors that make life truly remarkable. Whether that’s building a business, raising a family, or contributing to our community.
As parents, we believe the greatest gift we can give our children is happily married parents. As business owners, we believe that strong marriages create stronger communities. And as humans, we know that who we surround ourselves with matters. The success of our marriage is directly tied to the five other marriages we’re most connected to, so cultivating community isn’t just a preference, it’s a principle.
Especially in today’s world, where isolation is rampant, community and connection are at the heart of what we do and why we do it.
