Hi Shanette, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into photography began in a very personal place. I have a disabled child, and for a long time I didn’t know how much time I would have with her. Because of that uncertainty, I was constantly taking photos — capturing every smile, every milestone, every fleeting moment that felt sacred. Photography became my way of holding onto life when it felt fragile.
Two years ago, I bought my first Nikon Z5, and everything shifted from documenting memories into truly creating art. I fell in love with nature and wildlife photography and spent countless hours chasing light and exploring the outdoors. I later met a photographer I deeply admired and took his Milky Way workshop, which introduced me to night and astrophotography and completely expanded the way I saw the world and my camera.
As much as I love landscapes and the stars, I’m a major extrovert and a true people person. My heart kept pulling me back to human connection and storytelling. I know firsthand how precious life is, how quickly children grow, and how easily memories fade if we don’t preserve them. That naturally led me into family photography — and eventually into weddings.
Today, I focus on creating an elevated, highly supportive experience for my couples from the moment they book. My brides receive what I call the Crowned Bride treatment — a relationship-driven experience where I’m not just their photographer, but their hype woman, calm presence, and biggest supporter. I’m creatively open, love thinking outside the box, and enjoy capturing each love story exactly as my couples envision it, whether that’s candid, editorial, or through my Tag-Along Experience that documents the full story of their wedding planning.
I officially launched Shanette Photography professionally in October 2025 after years of shooting as a passionate hobbyist. Seeing the overwhelming joy on my clients’ faces when they receive their galleries confirms every day that this is exactly where I’m meant to be. I truly love what I do, and I believe when your work is something you love this deeply, it never really feels like work at all.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I’m a mom of three, and my oldest child is disabled, which brings a level of emotional weight, responsibility, and uncertainty that never really turns off. At the same time, my other two children still need me to show up fully — for school drop-offs, late-night talks, homework, sports, and all the little moments that make childhood magical and fleeting. Learning how to balance motherhood, caregiving, marriage, and building a business has been one of the most challenging — and humbling — parts of this journey.
There have been seasons where exhaustion was real, time felt impossibly short, and guilt tried to sneak in from every direction — guilt for working, guilt for resting, guilt for dreaming bigger. Chasing a creative calling while carrying real-life responsibility forces you to grow fast, prioritize fiercely, and learn how to give yourself grace when perfection simply isn’t possible.
Imposter syndrome has absolutely been part of the process — and honestly, it still shows up sometimes. I find myself comparing my work to photographers I deeply admire, questioning whether I’m truly “there yet,” and wondering if I belong in the same conversations as artists who inspire me. But I’ve learned to reframe that comparison into motivation rather than insecurity. Those photographers don’t discourage me — they push me to keep learning, refining, experimenting, and raising my own creative standards. Instead of chasing perfection, I focus on growth, authenticity, and serving my clients exceptionally well.
Professionally, stepping into photography also meant pushing through fear and self-doubt in tangible ways — investing in equipment, education, and marketing, trusting my eye, learning to value my work, and confidently stepping into a professional role. There were late nights editing after everyone went to bed, early mornings chasing light, and countless hours learning both the creative and business sides of an industry that doesn’t come with a handbook.
Ultimately, those struggles sharpened my purpose. Walking through uncertainty with my family has taught me how fragile and precious life truly is. It’s why I approach every client and every story with intention and gratitude. I don’t take moments for granted — because I know firsthand how quickly they can change. The challenges didn’t slow me down; they deepened my empathy, strengthened my resilience, and made me a better artist, business owner, and human.

I specialize in relationship-driven photography with a strong focus on families and weddings. My work centers around capturing real connection, genuine emotion, and the unscripted moments that tell a story beyond a single image. While I absolutely create beautiful posed portraits, I’m especially drawn to the in-between moments — the laughter, quiet glances, joyful chaos, and authentic interactions that make each family and couple completely unique.
Stylistically, I strive for light, bright, and true-to-life color that feels timeless, clean, and emotionally honest. My background in nature, night, and astrophotography has given me a strong technical foundation and creative flexibility, allowing me to adapt my editing and lighting approach to different environments while maintaining consistency and authenticity in skin tones and color.
In weddings, I’m known for creating an elevated, highly supportive experience that goes far beyond the wedding day itself. My brides receive what I call the Crowned Bride treatment. When working with children and families, flexibility is essential. I truly understand that kids operate on their own timeline — and that’s exactly how it should be. I don’t set rigid timers or force moments. If a toddler needs a snack break, a cuddle reset, or even multiple shorter sessions to feel comfortable, I’m happy to meet them where they are. The child is the boss, and I happily fall in line. That patience often leads to the most genuine, joyful images.
What truly sets me apart is the depth of connection I build with my clients. I don’t believe in being just a vendor who shows up for a few hours and delivers a gallery weeks later. I build genuine relationships so my clients feel comfortable, confident, and fully supported. I’m often described as a hype woman, calming presence, creative partner, and trusted guide — someone who helps clients feel their absolute best in front of the camera and throughout their experience.
Creatively, I love thinking outside the box while still honoring each client’s vision. Whether someone prefers very candid storytelling, softly guided posing, or a blend of both, I adapt to their comfort level and personality. Every family and every love story is different, and their images should reflect that individuality rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
What I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me and the emotional reactions they have when they receive their galleries. Seeing people relive meaningful moments, feel beautiful, and recognize the value of their memories is incredibly fulfilling. My goal is always for clients to walk away not only with images they love, but with an experience that feels supportive, joyful, and deeply personal.
What were you like growing up?
I was definitely a loud, life-of-the-party kid who genuinely cared about the people around me. Even at a young age, I was deeply aware of how others were feeling and always wanted to help, encourage, or make someone smile. I’ve always been a caretaker at heart — connection and compassion have been part of my wiring for as long as I can remember.
Creatively, I was constantly singing and dancing. I fully believed I was going to be the next Janet Jackson or Mariah Carey — big dreams and zero hesitation. As I moved into my teen years, that love for performance naturally expanded into both singing and acting. Being on stage felt effortless and oddly comforting. I was never shy about speaking in front of a crowd and even joined the debate team because I loved communicating, thinking on my feet, and using my voice.
My mom always told me I’d never thrive in a job where I sat in a cubicle all day — and she was absolutely right. I’ve always been a free spirit who needs room to move, create, connect, and express ideas in my own way. Structure has its place, but creativity and human interaction are where I truly come alive.
At the core, though, I’ve always been someone who puts people first. I care deeply about helping others feel seen, supported, confident, and celebrated. That combination of creativity, energy, empathy, and connection still defines who I am today — it just happens to show up now through photography instead of a microphone and stage lights.
