Today we’d like to introduce you to Eliza Singerman.
Hi Eliza, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been making art for as long as I can remember. Growing up, it was my creative outlet and a way to cope through some of my darkest moments, and it’s always been how I process the world. I went on to earn a degree in graphic design, but after stepping into the corporate world, I quickly realized it wasn’t where I belonged. I wanted to work with people and share art as a tool for expression and healing. That led me to become a PK–12 art teacher, where I get to help students find their own creative voices. In 2017, I started my own art business, Emancip8d, which was inspired by Bob Marley’s quote, “Emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds.” The idea of freeing the mind through creativity really defines my work and my life. Today, I have my own art studio at Bitfactory Studios, where I run my business and showcase my work. My journey has always come back to the same thing: using art as a way to connect, heal, and liberate the mind.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like most artists, I’ve gone through long periods of self-doubt, feeling uninspired, and questioning whether my work was “good enough” or even truly mine yet. Finding your own voice takes time, and there were moments where I felt stuck creatively or disconnected from my work. Learning to push through those phases, trust the process, and keep showing up even when I didn’t feel confident has been one of the biggest challenges, but also one of the most important parts of my growth.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work is rooted in experimentation and curiosity. I started with drawing, acrylic painting and over time expanded into oil paint, mixed media and collage, resin, graphic design, and custom apparel and merchandise. I consider myself a bit of a jack of all trades. Most recently, I’ve fallen in love with pyrography, or wood burning, which is essentially drawing with fire. That medium has led to some of my proudest work so far and really feels like a turning point in my practice. What sets my work apart is that I’m not tied to one medium or one style; I focus on using whatever tools best express the idea or emotion behind each piece.
What makes you happy?
What brings me the most joy is when my work makes someone feel seen or understood. Art can say things we don’t always have words for, and when someone connects with a piece or recognizes a part of themselves in it, that feels incredibly special to me. Those moments of quiet recognition and shared emotion remind me why I create in the first place. That kind of connection is everything to me. I’m just as happy when I watch my students grow into their creativity—when they start to see themselves as artists and notice how making art can lift their mood and help them process their emotions. Being part of that transformation is something I’m deeply grateful for.
