Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Diaz.
Hi Justin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m from the Bronx NYC born to a mixed mother and Puerto Rican father. I wa a raised in different situations from living with my great grandmother and single mother in the NYCHA projects, to moving with my mom and step father to Poconos PA in a house and community. I was also in foster care agencies (almost 27 different homes in 6 years) from 11-18. When I was 18-26 I was in and out of jail and homeless most of the time. I moved to Colorado during COVID in Sept 2020. This state has become a second home for me and I’ve been able to stay focus and make my dreams reality. I came with nothing but the clothes on my back. Since being in Colorado I’ve went back to college to be a medical assistant @ Concorde Career College-Aurora Campus and graduated class of 2022. I am now doing music as an artist and performer. I am an emcee on the mic and an artist at heart. I linked up with Derrick DeLeon, an entrepreneur in entertainment and he has been my music manager for a year and couple months as of now. Building my team has been the best journey in music.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This music journey hasn’t been a smooth road. A lot ups and downs, but that’s the best part. I say this, “My W’s are wins as always and my L’s aren’t Loses but Learning experiences.” Dealing with jealous artist and people in the industry to money hungry execs and promoters have been an issue but I’m too fly to care for them. One thing for sure have a way of income to fund this shit and team to believe you. If you an artist doing this shit by yourself it’s going to be hard to maneuver in this rap game. So a steady form of income works. One of struggles for someone one like me is that I’m an out of towner and to gain the respect and support of people out here is rare but it doesn’t bother me, everyone will notice and acknowledge me soon.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an emcee /rapper. I am a music artist. I battle rap, write songs for others, help produce other artist music. I also help manage 2 artist (B4mb00 & Scooby Smokes) with my manage Derrick DeLeon. I also do other forms of entertainment like stand up comedy. I am known for my music and performance and raps. Tbh I’ve been proud of many things since taking my music career more serious. I’ve opened for Dave East & Stevie Stone, I’ve traveled to New Orleans, South Dakota, and Colorado Springs to perform my music. I have made connections with music industry people (Hollywood Studios & Money Gang Entertainment. I’ve been in 2 battle rap tournaments in Denver. I work with a Grammy nominated engineer @mixedbyblitz & a big accomplishment was getting a song of mine sync on GTA 6 radio.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
The good times I’ve spent with my late mother always come to mind. Time with my grandparents. Going to my first Yankee Game.
