Today we’d like to introduce you to DeeBee Whimzy.
Hi DeeBee, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The inspiration for my artwork stems from my travels. I grew up island hopping through the Caribbean and Hawaii. It was through these travels that I made it a habit of exploring the biodiversity of the oceans and tropical rainforests.
I later used my passion for the environment to fuel my studies as an Environmental Engineer. With this degree I worked closely with architects as a mechanical engineer, drawing complex plumbing and hvac systems on building plans.
After a day at the office, I would make paintings for family and friends. That grew into making several painting collections including creating artwork for brands like YETI and Michaels. That ignited my desire to create a more immersive experience with my art by tackling large scale murals. I got my start painting murals at local restaurants. Fast forward to now I’ve partnered with major real estate developers, businesses, and universities across the country.
Now, as an engineer-turned-artist, I utilize my artwork to combine both my building design experience and my curiosity for patterns found in nature to create murals and paintings.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest challenge going from painting on canvas to painting a building was learning to use heavy machinery. Murals often require operating lift equipment like scissor lifts and boom lifts. So I had to take my time learning the controls. Safety first when you’re 30 feet in the air. It certainly helps that I’m not scared of heights.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m known for my mood-boosting murals and nature-inspired paintings. Here in Colorado, I was commissioned by Aspendale Centennial to paint a 200 ft long mountain mural on a warehouse.
I create murals for commercial, residential and industrial properties across the country. My murals use geometric shapes and patterns found in nature to transform spaces. My exterior murals have turned buildings facades into local landmarks. My interior murals create spaces that amplify branding lower anxiety and increase productivity. I’ve painted murals for businesses including Cornell University’s Rev offices, Brixmor Property Group, Thrive Juice Lab and the Wild Oak Cafe to name a few.
My collection of canvas paintings and art prints encourage you to get completely immersed in nature whether it be a bamboo forest or a close encounter with whales. I developed my own style of painting with acrylics by focusing on playing with color layering and geometry. Today, I manifest elements of nature with geometry to create playful semi abstract art.
I also partner with companies for special edition collections and art licensing collabs. For YETI I was asked to design limited edition tumblers. And for Solita’s Tacos grand opening, I was asked to be at the event live painting Clase Azul Reposado Tequila bottles.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
While I was painting the mountain mural for Aspendale Centennial, I received such a warm welcome from every person I encountered. One thing I did every week was frolic through the farmer’s markets. On days off I took trips to the mountains, kayaked on the lakes, and strolled through the botanical gardens.
Before arriving in Denver for the summer, I wish I understood a mile high city meant being a mile closer to the sun. But after stocking up on sunglasses I had one awesome adventure after another here.
