Daily Inspiration: Meet Laura Hartmann

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Hartmann.

Hi Laura, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For as long as I can remember, I have loved having a camera in my hand. The biggest shift for me, though, happened when I was asked to capture a wedding for the first time. I went from documenting the world around me to finding a deeper purpose.

The very first wedding day I captured was for a couple that had family abroad who couldn’t attend the ceremony. It was such an honor to have them reach out to me afterwards with so many kind messages about how much it meant to them to be able to experience the day through the video I created. I think of that first wedding often and continue to focus on the impact of my work beyond the wedding day itself.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest challenge for me as a business owner is finding out how much is too much to take on. When you love what you do, it’s easy to want to take on every wedding inquiry that comes your way, but it’s so imporant to step back and focus on creating a great experience for each couple from start to finish.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work as a wedding videographer centers around documenting wedding days in a way that combines documentary style, with a mix of artistic imagery. This means letting moments live without overly directing or staging them, but knowing when to create an intentional moment.

One of the areas I specialize in is capturing wedding days on super 8 film, which allows me to be even more intentional. Each roll of film has around 3 minutes of filming time, so being thoughtful with each shot is imparitive.

For me, the element that I’m most proud of is also what I feel sets me apart from others. I take a lot of pride in how I make couples feel on their wedding days. Almost every one of my reviews mentions how comfortable, calm, and cared for my couples feel, in addition to loving the videos created. There are so many talented creatives out there, but the experience for each of my couples is so deeply important to me.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
One thing that may be surprising is that I didn’t start my business with the intention of capturing weddings! At the time, I was drawn to travel and lifestyle photos and videos. It wasn’t until I had the experience of capturing a wedding day that I completely fell in love with the idea and experience of working in the wedding industry.
