Hi Danica, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved making things. Creativity has always been my way of slowing down, processing life, and finding a little peace.
For years, I ran an Etsy shop that became a creative refuge during a difficult season of my life. Looking back, that little shop reflected exactly where I was. It was filled with all kinds of handmade creations, each one teaching me something new, but there wasn’t a clear artistic direction. In many ways, my work was still searching for its identity, just as I was.
As life became calmer, I started asking myself what I truly wanted to create. The answer was surprisingly simple. I kept coming back to the things that have always inspired me: art, museums, natural history, the outdoors, and timeless design.
That realization became the foundation for Dani Dawn Design Co. Today, I create museum-inspired artwork that celebrates the beauty of the natural world, transforming my acrylic paintings into vinyl stickers that people can enjoy every day.
It’s been rewarding to watch my business grow alongside me. What began as a creative outlet has evolved into something deeply intentional. My work feels more focused, more authentic, and more reflective of who I am. My hope is that each piece inspires someone to pause for a moment, look a little closer, and rediscover the wonder that’s all around us.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. Like most small business owners, I’ve had plenty of moments where I questioned whether I was on the right path.
For a long time, I was creating the kinds of products I thought I should make because they were popular. I kept chasing trends, hoping something would stick, but none of it felt authentic. The more I tried to fit into what everyone else was doing, the more disconnected I became from my own creative voice.
I’ve also learned that creating art is only one part of running a business. Behind every finished piece is photography, website design, SEO, product descriptions, pricing, inventory management, and marketing. Some days I’m an artist, and other days I’m wearing every hat a small business owner can wear.
The biggest turning point came when I stopped asking what would sell and started asking what I genuinely wanted to create. Once I gave myself permission to follow my own interests, everything changed. My work became more focused, more meaningful, and much more enjoyable to create.
I’m still learning every day, but the challenges feel different now. Instead of trying to become the artist I thought I needed to be, I’m simply becoming more of the artist I’ve always been. That shift has made all the difference.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Today I create acrylic paintings inspired by the natural world and transform them into durable vinyl stickers that people can take with them wherever they go. I’m inspired by the kinds of subjects you might discover in a natural history museum or while wandering a forest trail. Mushrooms, birds, insects, wildflowers, and woodland animals all capture my attention because they invite us to slow down and look a little closer.
Each collection begins with research and observation before I ever pick up a paintbrush. I want every piece to feel timeless, with rich acrylic textures, a museum-inspired aesthetic, and a deep black background that allows each subject to stand out. Once the painting is finished, it’s reproduced as a high-quality vinyl sticker that’s made to be enjoyed for years.
What I’m most proud of isn’t simply creating stickers. It’s creating small pieces of art that spark curiosity and help people reconnect with the natural world. If one of my designs reminds someone of a favorite hike, a camping trip, or the excitement of discovering something unexpected outdoors, then I’ve accomplished exactly what I set out to do.
I think what sets my work apart is the intention behind every collection. Rather than chasing trends, I create subjects that genuinely fascinate me and take the time to research, refine, and paint each one with care. My hope is that every design feels less like a product and more like a tiny work of art that people can carry with them every day.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I don’t have a mentor, and I don’t have a secret formula for networking. Building my business has been a very independent journey, and in many ways, that’s become one of my greatest teachers.
Most of what I’ve learned has come through curiosity, persistence, and plenty of trial and error. Whenever I run into something I don’t know how to do, I research it, watch tutorials, read everything I can find, and keep experimenting until I figure it out. It hasn’t always been the fastest path, but it’s taught me how to solve problems and keep moving forward.
If I could offer one piece of advice, it would be this: don’t wait until you feel qualified before you begin. Start where you are, stay curious, and be willing to learn as you go. Every mistake teaches you something valuable, and every challenge helps you grow.
I still hope to learn from other artists and business owners along the way, but I’ve discovered that sometimes the best mentor is a willingness to keep asking questions, keep learning, and keep creating.
