Today we’d like to introduce you to Sahar.
Hi Sahar, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began my artistic journey in Yemen at a young age, participating in exhibitions and creative projects while developing my own artistic practice. Over the years, I pursued graduate studies in Fine Arts in New York and built a career through solo and group exhibitions, curatorial projects, and international collaborations.
I founded Qamaria for Arts and have curated exhibitions across the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. My work has received several honors and recognitions. Most recently, I was selected as one of the Arab America Foundation’s 40 Under 40, recognizing 40 influential Arab Americans across the United States.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not always been a smooth road. Building a career as an artist and curator while moving between countries, cultures, and different art communities came with its own challenges. I had to create opportunities for myself, often balancing my own artistic practice with curating, organizing exhibitions, and taking care of my family.
But all these challenges pushed me to become more resourceful, resilient, and intentional about the work I wanted to create and the opportunities I wanted to build for other artists. At the same time, I have been fortunate to meet people and institutions along the way who believed in my work and supported my vision.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a visual artist, curator, and founder of Qamaria for Arts. My artistic practice explores identity, memory, women’s experiences, and cultural heritage. My curatorial work focuses on creating platforms for artists and bringing Yemeni, Arab, and Islamic art into new cultural spaces.
Since 2021, I have been known in the United States as the Ambassador of Yemeni Fine Arts. In 2025, I was honored in Dubai at an event held under UNICEF patronage in recognition of this role.
What I am most proud of is bringing Yemeni and Islamic art to important cities and cultural spaces, particularly New York. I have curated exhibitions in museums, churches, art institutions, and other cultural venues, creating projects with their own identity and bringing together diverse audiences.
What sets me apart is the combination of my artistic practice and curatorial work. Having two cultural identities and backgrounds enriches my perspective, knowledge, relationships, and the way I approach both art and curating. I do not only create art. I create opportunities for art and artists to reach new audiences.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is creating work and exhibitions that go beyond visual experience and connect with the viewer on a deeper level. I strive to create complete experiences that engage the senses and leave an impact. I am proud when my work helps people understand Arab and Islamic cultural intersections from a fair perspective, while also giving artists the exposure they deserve.
But if the question is what matters most to me personally, it is my family.
