Today we’d like to introduce you to Harsha Chathuranga.
Harsha, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My earlier VoyageDenver interview shared much of the story of how I entered the creative industry and built my career as a designer, so this time I’d rather focus on what has happened since then.
One of the most meaningful parts of that journey actually began with VoyageDenver itself. When my first interview was published, I never expected it to have such a lasting impact. It gave my work greater visibility, strengthened my credibility online, and helped new people discover me. Over time, I was contacted by new clients who had come across my work and my story through features like that interview. It reminded me that sometimes an opportunity to simply share your story can open doors you never anticipated.
So I want to take this opportunity to genuinely thank VoyageDenver and the team for giving independent creatives and entrepreneurs a platform to be seen. Being featured the first time became more than just something I could add to my portfolio, it became a small but important part of my professional growth.
Since then, my biggest step forward has been building Avexa Digital.
Avexa Digital represents the direction I believe the creative and digital industries are moving toward. We are developing it as an AI-powered digital solutions company that combines creativity, design, development, marketing, and emerging technology to help businesses grow.
Our work includes website design and development, UI/UX, digital creative services, social media management, and AI-assisted solutions that can make everyday business processes smarter and more efficient. Rather than using AI simply because it is popular, our goal is to find practical ways to combine AI with human creativity and real business experience.
Travel and tourism has also become an important area for us. Having worked closely with businesses in this industry for many years, I understand that a travel website isn’t simply about looking beautiful, it needs to inspire people, build trust, generate enquiries, communicate offers clearly, and ultimately help turn visitors into customers. We are bringing that experience into Avexa Digital while also working with businesses in other industries.
Another change in my thinking is that I no longer see myself as someone who simply delivers a design or builds a website. I want to understand the client’s actual business problem first and then find the right digital solution for it. Sometimes that solution is better branding or UX, sometimes it is a new website, sometimes it is social media content, automation or AI and often it is a combination of several of those things.
For me, this is the beginning of a new chapter. I started as an individual creative building a career around design, but today my focus is on building something bigger, a company that brings together design, technology and AI to create meaningful solutions for businesses.
There is still a long way to go with Avexa Digital, and that is what makes this stage exciting. I am still learning, experimenting and adapting, especially as AI changes our industry so quickly. But the vision is clear, use creativity and technology not just to make things look better, but to help businesses work smarter, communicate better and grow.
Looking back, I’m grateful that VoyageDenver was part of the earlier chapter of my story, and I’m very happy to return now with a completely new one.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road, especially as my career has moved from being an individual designer into building a broader digital business.
One of the biggest challenges has been learning that being good at design or development is only one part of running a business. You also have to understand clients, communication, pricing, project management, marketing, systems, deadlines, and how to make decisions that are sustainable in the long term. That transition has taught me a lot.
Another challenge has been the speed at which the digital industry is changing, especially with AI. New tools and technologies appear almost every week. I see that as an opportunity, but it also means you cannot become comfortable with what you already know. I constantly have to learn, experiment, test new tools, and understand which technologies actually create value for clients rather than simply following trends.
Client expectations have also changed. Today, businesses don’t just want a beautiful website or good social media graphics. They want measurable results, more enquiries, better conversions, stronger engagement, faster workflows, and smarter ways of operating. That has pushed me to think beyond design and focus much more on solving business problems.
Building Avexa Digital has brought another set of challenges. Moving from working independently to creating a company means thinking about processes, consistency, collaboration, scalability, and maintaining quality as the workload grows.
Working closely with the travel and tourism industry has also taught me how quickly markets can change. Customer behavior, economic conditions, technology, social media platforms, and travel trends can shift very quickly. You have to be adaptable and willing to rethink your approach when something that worked yesterday no longer works today.
Probably the most important lesson I have learned is that challenges usually force you to improve. Some of the difficult projects, unexpected problems, and changes in the industry have actually pushed me to become a better designer, developer, problem solver, and business owner.
I don’t expect the road ahead to be perfectly smooth either. But I’m much more comfortable with that now. My focus is not on avoiding challenges; it is on building the ability to adapt, learn quickly, and keep moving forward.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Avexa Digital?
Avexa Digital is an AI-powered digital solutions company focused on helping businesses build stronger brands, better digital experiences, and more efficient ways of working.
We specialize in website design and development, UI/UX design, branding and creative services, social media management, digital marketing support, and AI-powered business solutions. A major area of our experience is the travel and tourism industry, where we work with businesses that need more than just a visually attractive website. They need digital platforms and content that build trust, communicate offers clearly, generate enquiries, and support real business growth.
What I want Avexa Digital to be known for is the combination of creativity, technology, and problem-solving.
We don’t want to approach every client with the same template or solution. Before we start designing, we try to understand the business itself, its customers, challenges, goals, current systems, and where opportunities are being missed. From there, we can decide whether the right solution is a website, a better user experience, stronger branding, social media management, automation, AI integration, or a combination of several services.
AI is also becoming an important part of what we do. But our approach is not simply to add AI because it is trending. We are interested in practical AI solutions that can save time, improve workflows, support marketing, improve customer experiences, and help businesses operate more efficiently. I believe the strongest results come when AI supports human creativity rather than replacing it.
Another thing that sets us apart is our attention to detail. Whether we are designing a small graphic, developing a complete website, or creating a larger digital system, we care about the small decisions, the user experience, typography, spacing, speed, functionality, consistency, and how everything connects to the client’s business goals.
I’m especially proud that Avexa Digital represents an evolution of everything I have learned throughout my career. I started primarily as a designer, but over the years my work expanded into UI/UX, web development, digital strategy, marketing, and now AI-driven solutions. Avexa Digital brings all of those areas together under one vision.
We are still growing the brand, and I actually see that as one of the most exciting parts of the journey. We are experimenting, learning, developing new services, and continuously looking at how emerging technology can create real value for our clients.
Ultimately, I want readers to understand that Avexa Digital isn’t just about creating something that looks good. We want to create digital solutions that help businesses perform better.
Our goal is simple, combine design, technology, AI, and human creativity to help businesses communicate better, work smarter, and grow.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My biggest advice to anyone starting out is don’t wait until you feel completely ready. You probably never will. Start with what you know, take on small opportunities, learn from each project, and allow your skills and direction to develop over time.
When I was starting out, I thought becoming a better designer was the main thing that would move my career forward. Design skills are important, of course, but I later learned that communication, reliability, problem-solving, understanding business, and building relationships are just as important as the creative work itself.
Your portfolio may help you get a client’s attention, but the way you communicate, handle challenges, meet deadlines, and make their life easier is often what makes them come back or recommend you to someone else. Some of the best opportunities can come from one satisfied client introducing you to another.
I would also tell people not to compare their beginning with someone else’s tenth year. Social media makes it very easy to feel as though everyone is progressing faster than you. Focus instead on becoming slightly better than you were yesterday. Consistency over several years is far more powerful than trying to become successful overnight.
Another thing I wish I understood earlier is the importance of learning the business side of your craft. Learn how to price your work, explain your value, manage projects, create clear agreements, understand what a client is actually trying to achieve, and eventually build systems around the things you repeatedly do. Being talented without knowing how to run the business around that talent can make growth much harder.
For people entering creative and digital careers today, I would also say learn AI, but don’t depend on AI. These tools are incredibly powerful and they are changing our industry quickly, but knowing how to use a tool is different from knowing what problem to solve. Creativity, judgment, strategy, taste, empathy, and understanding people are still extremely valuable.
Experiment with new technology, but keep strengthening your fundamentals.
Most importantly, build a reputation you are proud of. You don’t need hundreds of clients in the beginning. Take care of the clients and opportunities you already have. Do good work, keep your word, stay curious, and continue learning.
If I could tell my younger self one thing, it would probably be your career will not follow a perfect straight line, and that is completely fine. Some opportunities will work, some won’t, and sometimes the unexpected ones will change your direction entirely. Keep moving, keep learning, and be open to where the journey takes you.
