Today we’d like to introduce you to TeaYaMay.
Hi TeaYaMay, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is TeaYaMay
My story started with writing long before it started with music. Growing up in Colorado, i found poetry and writing to be a way to express things i didn’t always know how to say out loud. I would write and record myself on whatever i had available, and slowly turn those poems into songs. What started as an outlet eventually became a purpose.
Around 2012, i decided to stop treating music like something i did on the side and started taking myself seriously as an artist. Through Fait, connections, and networking I started building my name through independent music, shows, radio appearances, collaborations and simply putting in the work. I originally performed as T-May before evolving into TeaYaMay as my identity and my brand grew.
My path has never been easy. I battled depression, anxiety, toxic relationships, parenthood, homelessness, grief , insecurity, being overlooked and underestimated, criticism, and overall challenges that come with being a woman trying to make meaningful hip-hop in an industry that often puts more value on an image than the person behind the microphone. But those experiences shaped who I am today.
I’ve never really been interested in fitting into a box. I consider myself a lyricist first, and my music has always been rooted in creativity, honesty and looking at things from a different angle. My goal isn’t simply to make songs that sound good for a few minutes. I want people to hear something different in my music.
Over the years, I’ve built an independent catalog including projects like Socially Awkward , and singles such as “Ego,” “Come Foe,” “New Booty,” “Flaco Stuck,” “Lost Face,” “Shook,” and most recently “Liu Kang.” I’ve shared stages and collaborated with many artists from independent to major players in the industry.
But the biggest part of my story is resilience. Life has tested me in ways that had nothing to do with music, and those experiences have changed the way i write , the way i see people and the way i see the world. My music comes from the parts of life that aren’t always pretty through major losses and mistakes, rebuilding myself was my conscious decision to keep going anyway.
“ TeaYaMay “ isn’t trying to become somebody else’s version of a successful female rapper. I’m building something that’s meaningful to me and my story. After everything I’ve been through, I’m less interested in proving that i belong and more interested in proving what happens because i refused to quit.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Some of the struggles include self esteem, self love, self worth , self regret , self control and overall selflessness . Remaining self aware in a selfish world that embraces self sabotage over self reflection.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I do so much that it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what I do. I genuinely just love to create. My skills range from minimal to complex. I sew, I cook, I rap, I edit videos, I work, I’m a mother, I’m a wifey and so much more. I’m known but I’m not, I’m a public figure but I’m low key. I specialize in everything I do because the things I do are special. What sets me apart is remaining so mysterious and leaving people curious
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I like the diversity I dislike the animosity
