Today we’d like to introduce you to Kylie Nielsen.
Hi Kylie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my journey in the hair industry about four years ago, as a junior in high school. I graduated high school May of 2024 and was officially a licensed cosmetologist by July of that same year. Since then, I have been really focused on learning as much as I can and growing both technically and creatively. I started out at a commission salon, but after about a year I went my own route and created my business, Nielsen Hair Co. I’ve always had a creative side and I really just love making people feel seen and beautiful.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I believe that there are hardships in any career path one might choose to go. Before getting in to cosmetology school, I knew that it wasn’t going to just be a walk through the park, but once I was licensed and got into the real world, things were hard. One thing that I still struggle with after being in the industry for over two years is my confidence. It is so easy to compare myself and my work to others and just feeling like I should know more or like I should be further along in my journey. There have most definitely been times where I have questioned myself or felt extremely discouraged, but those moments are crucial to becoming a resilient stylist and individual.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work is rooted in color, highlights, haircuts and styling. Being a hair stylist isn’t just playing with hair though. So much goes into it that most people don’t realize which is important to teach your clients about. The more educated your clients are on the process and outcomes of their hair, the more grace they give due to a mutual understanding that hair stylists aren’t magicians! We are simply just humans doing our best to make you feel your best. I like to believe the thing that sets me apart from other people in my field is my touch. I have always been told how gentle I am when handling my clients’ hair, whether it is brushing, styling, or washing. You just never know when a client in your chair needs that slow, gentle moment in their crazy lives. I take pride in knowing that even if for just a brief moment, I can help relieve some stress from my clients with a simple head massage at the shampoo bowl. It really is the little things.
What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future as of right now is to continue building a solid clientele. I want to be the person who can help others feel beautiful and remind them they are cared for. Later down the road, I would love to partner with my brother who happens to be a barber and do some kind of joint place where we can both do what we love-hair, but in an environment together. As for now though, nothing too crazy in the works:)
