Rising Stars: Meet Matthew Birch Our Violet Room (my Band) of Denver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Birch Our Violet Room (my Band).

Hi Matthew Birch , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my music journey after a hard divorce and a late in life autism diagnosis. After rejecting the autism diagnosis for a year, I slowly started to accept it and get the help I needed through counseling. After a few years of intensive counseling I started to play my music at open mics. At my second open mic the head booker for Sofar Sounds Denver Brandy Sachen was there at the bar and booked me for a show that very weekend. Within that first year, I was playing music all over the States and World and had my songs on TV and Movies. It was a dream. Then Covid hit and everything came to a screeching halt…Ever since then, I’ve been trying to recapture the momentum I had before.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s hard being an indie band in today’s world. There are 16 million other band trying to “make it” just like I am and most of the time in today’s music industry the way to get known and heard is by doing things you’re not totally comfortable with , like becoming a content creator. Thats been very hard for me. I understand that’s a “first world” issue but for someone who doesn’t want the spotlight and who just wants to make lovely music , having to sell your personality just to get heard is rough.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an indie artist and my band is Our Violet Room. We make cinematic indie music. We are a 7 member band and we just love playing together. I’m most proud of the art that we have been making together. We put our all in every part of the recording process in order to make the best music possible. So I’m proud of the work we do together. Our friendships and our shared vision and values.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Music wise, making art that makes people feel. That encourages people and that inspires people.

In life, nature, animals, friendships, antiques, oddities, interior design, sarcasm and dive bars, family and friendships are the things that bring me joy. And my cats
