Daily Inspiration: Meet Richard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard.

Hi Richard, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a Denver native and I’ve always been drawn to photography and capturing moments that have a certain feeling to them. I started taking photos with my phone because I liked showing Denver and everyday life from a darker, more cinematic point of view. I never really expected it to turn into anything bigger—I was just creating because I genuinely enjoyed it.

A big part of who I am today comes from what I went through when I was younger. At 17, I was diagnosed with leukemia. I went through chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, and today I’m grateful to say I’ve been in remission for six years. Going through something like that at such a young age changed the way I look at life. It made me appreciate time, memories, and the small moments that people sometimes overlook. In a way, I think that perspective carries over into my photography too.

Eventually, I started sharing my work through lostinthedrkk on Instagram. Over time, more people connected with my style, and the page grew to around 90,000 followers. That still feels crazy to me because something that started as a personal creative outlet became a community of people who genuinely connect with what I create.

A lot of my photography is inspired by nighttime, snow, streetlights, gloomy weather, city streets, and those quiet moments people normally pass by without thinking twice about. I like taking something ordinary and making it feel cinematic or nostalgic. I’ve continued teaching myself more about editing, color grading, and telling a story through an image instead of simply taking a picture.

Outside of photography, I work full time for the City and County of Denver in Street Maintenance. I’ve worked my way up, earned my CDL, and gained experience operating heavy equipment and working on Denver’s streets. I’m also a dad, so balancing work, family, and my creative side can get busy, but photography has always been something I come back to.

I’ve been through a lot at a young age, and I think that’s taught me not to take opportunities or life for granted. I’m still learning and growing, and I feel like I’m only getting started. I want to keep improving my photography, travel and capture new places, invest in better equipment, and continue building lostinthedrkk into something bigger while staying true to the style and feeling that got me here in the first place.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of my biggest challenges was being diagnosed with leukemia at 17 and going through chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. I’m grateful to now be six years in remission. Since then, I’ve learned to appreciate life and every opportunity I get. Balancing being a dad, working full time, and growing my photography has also been challenging, but it’s taught me to stay consistent and keep pushing forward.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
lostinthedrkk is my creative photography page focused on capturing dark, cinematic, and nostalgic moments. I’m known for turning everyday scenes—city streets, snow, fog, streetlights, sunsets, and late nights—into images that feel like a memory or a scene from a movie. I’ve built the page to around 90,000 followers, and I’m most proud that I did it by developing my own style and creating work that people genuinely connect with. What sets lostinthedrkk apart is the mood behind every photo—I want people to feel something, not just look at a picture.

What’s next?
My biggest goal for the future is to turn lostinthedrkk into my full-time career and be able to make a living doing what I love. I want to keep growing my photography and eventually work with major organizations like the Denver Nuggets, Denver Broncos, Live Nation, artists, and other big events. I’d love to travel, experience new places, and create for a living while continuing to build the style and name behind lostinthedrkk.
