Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobby Mikulas.
Hi Bobby, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My wife Brooke and I moved back to Colorado Springs in 2010 and started digging for the things we loved about other communities — live music, local art, good outdoor recreation, great people, great food. All the things young folks look for. While they weren’t as plentiful or dense as in other cities, we found what we were looking for and really began to fall in love with Colorado Springs.
Fast forward seven years: we packed our bags, exited our careers, and spent a year traveling through 11 countries. We moved slowly, getting to know the places we lived in, carrying everything we owned in a single carry-on bag. Throughout that year we were deeply moved by outrageously generous hospitality — and we became determined to bring a new kind of hospitality back to Colorado Springs.
That trip launched the birth of Kinship Landing. We came home, recruited a passionate group of co-founders and local creative professionals, and together we concepted and designed the hotel from the ground up. We built the building and opened in 2021 — a non-flagged boutique hotel called Kinship Landing, with a locally beloved full cafe and bar called Homa.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Heck no. Nothing worth building comes out of the ground without challenge and pressure. Pressure is what forces creativity and problem solving. The hardship is what creates growth.
We had our fair share of challenges. Raising roughly $10 million for the first time in our lives was not an easy lift. Thanks to the generosity of our local community and the belief of passionate owners, investors, and neighbors, we were able to do it. We also opened right in the heart of COVID — one of the most disruptive periods in hospitality in the last hundred years — which came with its own set of trials.
And while we were the first hotel approved to be built in downtown Colorado Springs in over a hundred years, we’ve since seen over 850 new hotel rooms open within a mile of where we stand. That’s a significant amount of new competition in a short window. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been fun — and it’s caused us to grow in ways we wouldn’t have otherwise.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Kinship Landing is a friendly boutique hotel located in downtown Colorado Springs. Homa Cafe and Bar is a locally beloved spot serving casual, wholesome fare — breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day, with brunch on Sundays.
We’re known for providing an authentically local experience of Colorado Springs for overnight guests. We aren’t a chain, and we aren’t owned by a national trust. We were founded, operated, and are beloved by locals — so when you stay with us, you get a genuine taste of what this city is and the best it has to offer. We’re known for pointing guests toward the city’s best attractions, restaurants, cultural events, and happenings.
What truly sets us apart is a feeling of authentic belonging. That comes from a staff who genuinely love what they do and love this community. Our brand is also deeply intentional aesthetically — there are little Easter eggs hidden throughout the property that hint at our five core values, and we aim to express those values in everything we do.
Our rooms range from a luxurious King Suite with a soaking tub, fireplace, and overhead garage door, all the way to a junior queen that lives by the motto “everything you need, nothing you don’t” — cozy charm and elegant design. At Homa, we serve nutrient-dense, wholesome, and delicious food: salad and grain bowls, our beloved North Park sandwich, hand pies, and our own Pueblo pork green chili.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Many people assume we’re a large company, that we have a national presence, or that we come from hospitality backgrounds. None of those things are true. Brooke and I founded Kinship Landing with zero formal hospitality training. No hotel school. No industry pedigree. Just two people in their twenties who were inspired by a year of world travel and determined to bring something special home.
Because of the incredible group of co-founders, owners, investors, and community members who believed in the vision, we’ve been able to bring a globally recognized boutique hotel to market — one that has since been featured in Conde Nast and beyond. Most people don’t know that it started with just two young people, a carry-on bag, and a dream shaped by the generosity of strangers around the world.
