Community Highlights: Meet Kevin Clancy of AIM

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Clancy.

Hi Kevin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey into the home technology industry started long before AIM. Growing up, I was always fascinated by electronics and figuring out how things worked. I remember spending hours experimenting with my dad’s old stereo receiver in our garage and being amazed by the surround-sound system my uncle had in his basement. That curiosity eventually turned into hands-on experience when I was 15 and decided to install a new sound system in my first car. The installation was far from smooth, but it taught me a lot about problem-solving and sparked an even greater interest in technology.

After graduating from college, I knew I wanted to build my own business someday, but I wasn’t sure which direction to take. I had a background in sales and a strong interest in construction, electronics, and technology, which eventually led me to a position as a system designer at an audio-visual company in Minneapolis. Over the next five years, I gained experience designing, selling, and managing residential and commercial projects, including home theaters, whole-home audio systems, motorized window shades, lighting control, and security systems. That experience deepened my understanding of the industry and helped shape my vision for starting a company.

My business partner, Marc, and I actually met years earlier in 2012 while attending the University of Minnesota. We worked together for several years, developed a friendship, and stayed in touch even after our careers took us in different directions. In 2019, we reconnected at a mutual friend’s wedding, where a conversation about starting a business together eventually became the foundation for AIM.

From there, we spent about a year developing our business plan, meeting regularly over video calls, and working through the details of what we wanted to create. When we officially launched AIM, it was just the two of us managing everything from sales and marketing to installations and day-to-day operations. As the business grew, we brought on team members and developed the systems and processes needed to support our customers.

Today, AIM specializes in custom window treatments, motorized shades, and lighting control solutions for homeowners throughout the Denver Metro area, Colorado’s Front Range, and Western Slope communities. We help customers improve privacy, manage natural light, increase energy efficiency, and make their homes more comfortable and functional.

Looking back, it’s rewarding to see how far we’ve come from those early planning conversations. We’ve grown from a two-person operation into a company with a dedicated team and more than 400 five-star reviews. While the business has evolved over the years, our focus remains the same: providing quality products, knowledgeable guidance, and delivering a personalized experience from consultation to installation.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting AIM from the ground up meant learning how to balance multiple responsibilities while figuring out what worked best for the company. In the beginning, Marc and I were involved in just about everything, from sales and marketing to installations and daily operations. As the business grew, we quickly realized that we couldn’t continue doing everything ourselves.

One of our biggest learning experiences has been hiring and building the right team. Our hiring process certainly wasn’t perfect at first. We learned through trial and error that finding someone with the right skills is only part of the equation. Reliability, communication, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn are just as important, especially in a business where customer service plays such a significant role.

Marketing has also presented its own challenges. Building a reliable marketing team and finding the right strategies to reach potential customers hasn’t always been easy. We’ve had to evaluate different approaches, learn what resonates with our audience, and adapt as the business has grown. These experiences have helped us become more intentional with our marketing efforts and how we position AIM in a competitive industry.

Looking back, those challenges have taught us valuable lessons about leadership, communication, and running a business. We certainly haven’t gotten everything right the first time, but we’ve always been willing to learn, make adjustments, and keep improving. I think that’s a big part of what has helped AIM grow into the company it is today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
AIM is a locally owned and operated Colorado company specializing in custom window treatments and lighting control. We help homeowners create more comfortable, functional, and beautiful living spaces with personalized solutions that address privacy, light control, energy efficiency, and home automation.

We work with homeowners throughout Colorado’s Front Range, including Denver, Englewood, Littleton, Centennial, Aurora, Parker, Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch, Arvada, Golden, Lakewood, Boulder, Loveland, Fort Collins, and Colorado Springs. Our service area also extends into Colorado’s Western Slope, including Aspen, Vail, Silverthorne, Frisco, Dillon, and Grand Junction. Our goal is to make selecting and installing custom window treatments as convenient and straightforward as possible.

What sets AIM apart is our personalized approach. We bring the showroom directly to our customers through free in-home consultations, allowing them to explore different products, fabrics, colors, and operating systems in their own space. Rather than recommending a one-size-fits-all solution, we take the time to understand each homeowner’s needs, preferences, and budget before helping them find the right products for their home.

We offer a wide selection of custom blinds, shades, shutters, privacy sheers, drapes, curtains, and side panels from trusted manufacturers such as Hunter Douglas, Alta, Carole Fabrics, and Insolroll. We also specialize in motorized window treatments, including Hunter Douglas PowerView® Automation, and Lutron lighting control solutions. These technologies let homeowners easily adjust their window coverings and lighting to fit their daily routines while improving comfort, privacy, and energy efficiency.

Another important part of our business is our in-house Hunter Douglas-certified design consultants and installers. From the initial consultation and professional measurements to installation and ongoing support, we work to provide a seamless experience. Our team has extensive product knowledge, and we believe proper installation and attention to detail matter as much as the products themselves.

In addition to working directly with homeowners, we’ve built relationships with interior designers, home builders, home stagers, and other home industry professionals throughout Colorado. Through our AIM Trade Program, we provide industry partners with access to exclusive trade pricing, product recommendations, complimentary samples, professional measurements, and installation coordination. We enjoy collaborating with other professionals to bring their design visions to life.

What I’m most proud of is the reputation we’ve built and the relationships we’ve developed with our customers. Today, AIM has earned more than 400 five-star reviews, reflecting our team’s dedication to quality workmanship, clear communication, and customer satisfaction. We also offer the AIM Monitoring Program, which provides labor coverage for approved manufacturer warranty claims on qualifying projects, giving customers additional support after installation.

At the end of the day, we’re not just selling window treatments. We’re helping people make meaningful improvements to their homes. Whether it’s finding the right shades for a sunny living room, adding motorized curtains for convenience, or integrating lighting control into a smart home, we want our customers to feel confident that they’re making the right investment. That’s the experience we strive to deliver with every project.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was always curious about how things worked, especially when it came to electronics and technology. I enjoyed working with my hands, taking on projects, and figuring things out on my own. I was the type of kid who could spend hours trying to understand how something worked rather than just accepting that it did.

Some of my earliest interests came from being around audio equipment. My dad had an old stereo receiver in our garage that I loved experimenting with, and I was fascinated by the surround-sound system my uncle had in his basement. Those experiences sparked my interest in electronics and eventually led me to take on my own projects.

One of my more memorable experiences was when I was 15 and decided to upgrade the sound system in my first car, a 1996 Buick Regal that my mom had passed down to me. I ordered new speakers, a receiver, and subwoofers and spent an entire weekend trying to install everything. It ended up being much more complicated than I expected, and I definitely made a few mistakes along the way. But I learned a lot from that experience, particularly the importance of patience, problem-solving, and learning from mistakes.

Looking back, I think that curiosity and willingness to take on challenges have stayed with me throughout my life. I’ve always enjoyed finding solutions, learning new skills, and seeing a project come together. Those interests eventually played a big role in the career I pursued and my decision to start AIM.
