Today we’d like to introduce you to Bushenga “Bubba Peace”.
Hi Bushenga “Bubba Peace”, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Thank you God, for this moment, for whomever reads this message and for the ongoing opportunities to restore blessings and breakthrough barriers! My name is Bushenga which means pray and gather the people, however you can call me Bubba Peace. After 8 years of deep introspection, going to studio’s late at night, creating with Artists across the country, and detaching from expectations, I released my debut album Roots of a Rose on May 8th, 2025 to honor the murder of my Uncle Mikel McIntyre on May 8th, 2017 by police in Rancho Cordova, CA. You see, my Uncle Mikey had dreams, was drafted by the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates respectively, yet his path became a familiar struggle with Black Men and mental health. After Mikey’s transition, I committed to authentically, yet mindfully speaking up on issues that I found pressing. Most of which involve the Black Community and our deeply rooted traumas, mental health battles, and complicated family dynamics. Roots of a Rose takes listeners on an inner child journey where I face my mother wounds with compassion.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Truthfully, the challenges that came with producing this project are innumerable. My family dynamics were altered quite a bit, I fell in Love and experienced some crushing heartbreaks, and honestly I had to look at all my flaws with an open heart. When we have to ask ourselves some direct questions about our self worth and our boundaries, what we will accept vs disrespect, our lives are changed dramatically. I was a doormat at times…I wanted to please people in my life too much and my mental health was strained to the point where I put off a project I started years ago due to not making consistent & firm decisions. Yet each and every experience grew me beyond measure and I am eternally grateful for heartbreaks because I was shown what love is. Love is a product of your actions…
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As an Artist I have released severals singles, one EP called Rose in 2021, and now my debut album Roots of a Rose. Roots of a Rose is a deep dive into my inner child and mother wounds. I explore the narratives that were in my head about becoming a man and father, while also attempting to understand the struggles of black boys & girls and blackness in general. Yet rather than focusing on selling tickets to fans, I prefer to partner with businesses, schools, and nonprofits to make sure I am accessible to community. There’s a delicate balance between generating profit and allowing my art to reach people who need tools to overcome mental health issues, traumas, childhood wounds, and various attachment styles. Ultimately, my music, poetry, and writing allow me to realize I am in control of my narrative no matter what is going on. It’s my brave space to play with words joyfully and explore my state of mind unapologetically.
Although music has a forever home in my Heart, my passion is helping people ground themselves through wellness disciplines, martial arts, grounding techniques, and living freely in the world, especially melanated folks. I am establishing my 501(c)(3) Peace Medi Moves to provide wellness disciplines, mindfulness, and martial arts for at-risk youth and their families. Martial Arts in particular has allowed me to develop principles to manage all the adversities in life. By training my mind to focus on discernment and embracing opportunities that serve my Highest Self, I am learning to not only overcome my personal challenges, but create programs that help others do the same!
I am excited to share Peace Medi Move’s upcoming program Rent Free will be occurring at the Montbello FreshLo Hub very soon. Rent Free is a Black Family Wellness Gathering where participants drum and dialogue together while learning techniques to remove mental barriers for intergenerational healing. I decided to create Rent Free after hosting Peace Medi Moves’ annual Wakanda Weekend for the last three years in November and seeing how families enjoyed discussing various wellness topics openly while drumming and eating good food together. What I have observed is families have so many strengths in our lived experiences however sharing the collective wisdom across generations has been challenging due to strained family dynamics and trauma. However, as we saw in the movie Sinners, music is one of our greatest methods to storytelling. Between making albums, and facilitating programs like Rent Free, I aspire to help families ground themselves and take ownership of our stories for generations to come.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The three biggest lessons I learned recently were not to force what I cannot control, to free myself from being pressured to do anything, and discern & decide. As a Creative and Entrepreneur, failure is inevitable, yet letting go of outcomes and focusing on process is key. Everything from how I wake up to how I go to sleep requires a certain level of discernment & I have to decide on a regular basis what that process entails. I can control how I respond to situations that happen unexpectedly, yet I have no control over world views, opinions, or the actions of others, therefore remaining consistent in my approach is what matters. Yet I also learned to release the pressure of doing things just because…It goes back to the doormat comment. People pleasing leads to some very uncomfortable feelings, yet when I do things from a genuine place and put God first in my actions, more often than not, I feel whole.
