Today we’d like to introduce you to Halley Prince.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
No matter how much you plan for something, that does not mean it will always work out. I felt I always had a solid plan for my future growing up. I dreamed of furthering my education in Arizona. After attending orientation at ASU, I realized I wasn’t going to be able to afford to attend. I was looking out the window on my plane ride back to Denver shedding tears. I felt like I was in a 90’s R&B video. Just lower the lights and cue the music, we’ve got a good production. Looking back on that dramatic moment, I actually chuckle because little did I know I had way bigger things in store for me. After another failed attempt to go to college in Colorado, I felt at my lowest. I didn’t know where my life was going. Holding the title of a two-time college dropout, I decided to take a chance on an interest I always had since a kid. So that’s when I bought my camera. I had no idea how to use it but I went out and started filming videos of whatever I could. I did a couple modeling videos, car shows, and party recaps to start out but honestly, I wasn’t seeing the bigger picture at that time. 6 months later I did my first music video and after that the grind was unstoppable.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Drawbacks are tests of faith in your dream. When I first started filming, a lot of people turned me away for service. Even when I was offering services for free! It was crazy to me that no one wanted to work with me even for no charge. It also didn’t help that I’m a female trying to make a break in a predominantly male field. It was a little discouraging, but I viewed this struggle as a test. How bad did I want to be a filmmaker? I kept the faith in my dream and it led me to eventually find people that did want to work with me. I now ironically have some clients that offer to pay me more than what I’m charging.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in video work. Although I love taking photos as well, I always felt that I’m limitless for creativity when filming. At this time most of my work is music industry based. These services include music videos, show recaps, etc. I also do commercials, clothing line lookbooks, documentaries, podcasts, weddings, sport workouts, etc. My portfolio honestly is all over the place, but that’s how I like it. I want people to feel like no matter what they want to create, I can bring the vision to life. I feel like that is what sets me apart from others. I’m open to create anything. Even if I don’t know how at that time, I will find a way to execute.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I see the film production industry going back to being more predominantly female, or at least becoming more diverse. It was clear right away that not a lot of women are in the production side of the film industry. So, I became interested in learning about the history of my industry. Particularly, if women were even a part of the start of it all. But ironically enough the first film editor was a woman named Viola Lawrence. That’s only one example of how women were a big part of the start of the industry, there are plenty of more. This is so inspiring for me now decades later, as a woman in the same industry. Even though now it’s not common to see women a part of the production process. However, I already see a lot of women becoming filmmakers currently. So, I cannot wait to see how diverse the industry becomes over the next decade.
