Today we’d like to introduce you to Gequinn Mattox.
Hi Gequinn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
What started out as a love for my family and my desire to bring all of our individual families together as one big family to celebrate holidays and special occasions quickly became a passion of mine. It was something that gave me so much joy. All the planning and coordinating of every element of our gatherings was all worth it because I knew how happy it would make my family and our friends. The smile on their faces and the excitement in their eyes were priceless.
They say that we all have a gift, and I’ve always wondered what mine was. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I realized that my ability to bring people together and to create memorable events was my gift. It’s not something that I was formally trained for, but my skill set as an Executive Assistant and later as a Program Coordinator transferred well into event planning. The more I planned events, the more I loved it. I had an ability that came easy for me. I knew this was my true purpose to do for others what they couldn’t or didn’t want to do for themselves.
I’ve been on this journey for over a decade, but when the pandemic hit, it caused me to take a long hard look at my life. I thought about what was really important to me and what I wanted for my, and my family’s, future. It was then that I decided to no longer put myself and what I wanted to do on the back burner. It was during this time of uncertainty that I decided to do something positive and rebuild myself and pursue my dreams for my life. I also wanted to provide generational wealth for my daughter and my grandsons. I want to help provide for their lives and their futures even after I am gone.
Even though I am on my own “pursuit of happiness” for living out the life I dream of, I also want to empower those coming up after me to do what I do. I want to show them there is much gratification that comes from serving others. It hasn’t always been sunshine and rainbows. It is my faith that continues to drive me and to protect me on this journey of being a servant and doing what I love.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. There have even been times that I’ve doubted myself and my ability to move forward. There is so much information out there, so many things they say you should do, so many ways to do them, etc. It became so overwhelming. What I had to learn to do was to silence the noise and take… my… time! I had to do what was best for me and not worry about what others were doing.
Not all business owners have the same drive or work ethic as I do. It became discouraging but I had to continue to push through and be selective about who I surrounded myself with. People are going to let you down, but don’t let it stop you or slow you down. Learn from it and move on.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I took a risk by officially becoming an LLC business in the midst of a pandemic. I took a risk of starting a business in an industry hardest hit by the pandemic. With the hospitality industry facing an uncertain future, I continued to pursue my dream of becoming a business owner and planning for my future of being a full-time Event Planner.
Taking risks can be scary or invigorating, and sometimes, both. It can defeat you or propel you. It depends on the person and their perspective on life. Whether you’re a risk-taker not, it’s your life and you should do what you feel is best for YOU!
