Inspiring Conversations with Jennifer Fly of milehmodern

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Fly.

Jennifer Fly

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a Colorado Native, raised in Evergreen, and have spent my entire adult life in Boulder County. My first job in real estate was as an assistant when I was 16.

I had my daughter, Mary, when I was 18, which altered my plans for college and law school. As a young single mom, since I already had a bit of experience in real estate, I found a job as a real estate assistant in Boulder. I worked full-time and got my real estate license while taking night classes at the University of Colorado, eventually graduating with a degree in Finance and Business Administration.

From there, I worked for a luxury real estate developer in Boulder County, before transitioning full-time to sales at Colorado Landmark, Realtors, a boutique firm in Boulder after my son, Jack, was born in 2006. I spent sixteen years there, six of them as Vice President.

I was approached by milehimodern in early 2021 to open and manage their growth in the Boulder market and have never looked back! I love my dual role as Agent and Managing Broker – it gives me the opportunity to provide the best service and experience to my clients, as well as support my agents with their businesses.

I currently live in Louisville with my husband Dierk (who is also in real estate), my son Jack, who is sixteen now, and my two dogs, Bodie and Cali. My daughter Mary is a third-grade teacher in Scottsdale.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been relatively smooth so far?
Starting in the business as a very young woman was challenging – it’s hard to be taken seriously when you are young and new.

I have been incredibly fortunate to have wonderful mentors along the way who gave me opportunities to support them with their luxury clients and gain experience that I wouldn’t have otherwise had. I learned quickly to say “yes” to every opportunity to learn and grow in this business and that mindset has brought me here.

Finding work-life balance is an ongoing struggle. Real estate appealed to me because I knew I could have a flexible schedule while raising my kids. As real estate agents know, that’s a double-edged sword – I was able to be present for my kids as they were growing up but also had to work A LOT of evenings, weekends, and while on vacations. That can be tough on a family.

My husband Dierk is the COO and General Counsel for Kentwood Real Estate in Denver. It helps to have a partner who “gets it” when I have to work during some of those less convenient times. My son coined the term “realting” when he was little and we have a strict “no realting” rule during family dinners.

It also helps to have a wonderful and supportive team behind me – I couldn’t do what I do without my entire support team at mhm.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
milehimodern is best known for our incredible marketing focusing on artistic presentation and our fresh, cutting-edge approach to real estate. We see every home as a piece of art and our extraordinary team of talented brokers, marketing professionals, and content creators presents each of our homes in their highest light, resulting in the highest representation for our clients.

I am incredibly proud of all of milehimodern’s vision and values – especially the mission to challenge the mediocrity that is unfortunately so common in this industry. Our coaching and business development platforms help our agents grow both personally and professionally, and mhm agents are committed to excellence in everything we do.

Real estate can be a very lonely business – what I love most about mhm is the collaborative culture that we have created. Our agents truly support one another, share ideas, and desire the best for each other.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
My hope is that agents will continue to raise the bar and approach this business with professionalism and integrity.  And while I love and appreciate technology, I believe this business is and always will be built on relationships.  It’s about listening, communicating, and understanding that buying or selling a home is one of the biggest decisions people make in their life, and our job is to bring peace of mind to an otherwise stressful process. No app or technology platform can do that for clients.
