Life & Work with Megan Sweeney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Sweeney.

Hi Megan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have loved making videos since I was a little kid and had my first video camera. Growing up outside Philly, my high school had a tv studio with an amazing teacher, Mr. Profeta. I wish I could tell him today how much I appreciated him. He let me do my own thing. I learned to edit on an Avid and created my own projects.

I never could imagine doing anything else so naturally I continued, went to film school in Los Angeles, moved to Colorado for the lifestyle and here I am… making all sorts of videos from documentaries to travel to local businesses.

I think when you love something so much, the risk seems smaller and the reward of happiness seems easier to achieve.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Bumpy roads usually have more adventure! I don’t think I’ve had it too hard but no one escapes without some struggle. I think there’s getting past your mental limitations and continuing to grow your knowledge on a subject. Never think you know it all, make room to learn.

Another obstacle with filmmaking is that the tools can get expensive. Staying on top of having the equipment I need to tell a story can have its challenges and can be intimidating. Ultimately it’s the person behind the camera that creates the video.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Thank you for the kind words! I’m a filmmaker based out of the Boulder, Colorado area. I specialize in short documentary style videos and wear many hats.

I’m proud of staying true to my voice and wanting to connect with people through filmmaking from all over. What sets me apart from others is I typically produce, direct, shoot, and edit – working efficiently and with limited resources. I’m greatly inspired by musicians and listen to all kinds of music like it’s a soundtrack for a movie. My kids also inspire me. My goal is to leave an audience feeling happier.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m a big believer in simply trying. If I have a vision or dream for a video project, it’s always worth reaching out. There’s not much to lose except hearing a “no” and that’s ok. If you don’t take the risk you fail without even trying. Like Albert Einstein said, “You never fail until you stop trying”.

I’m totally in love with filmmaking and am really happy with the niche I’ve found in Colorado. After studying Cinema-TV at the University of Southern California I could have stayed and worked on big crews but I wanted the creative freedom and ability to do my own thing with filmmaking while being in the outdoors. Making videos in Colorado is a dream!
