Meet Korey Foss

Today we’d like to introduce you to Korey Foss.

Hi Korey, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a soul singer – I play piano and guitar and I write original songs. From the time I was a little girl, I always wanted to be a singer. When I think back, it is something I just knew I was going to do. I started taking piano lessons at age seven, began with choir at age ten and was involved in music lessons and choirs all throughout school into college. As an adult, I performed in a few musicals and was in a jazz choir over the years. However, I was persuaded not to pursue music as a career as it is much more responsible and reliable to major in a more traditional subject and get a “real” job. So, I chose accounting since I was always good at math and figured it was steady work. Now, I do have a freelance accounting business (Korey Foss Accounting – www.kfossaccounting.com) supporting local entrepreneurs pursuing their dreams. I do this work part-time on my own schedule to leave time for practicing, writing and performing. I am taking some larger steps in my musical endeavors this year as I grow into realizing myself as an artist.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Is it ever a smooth road? 😊 Finding my way back to music was not an easy path for me, yet looking back, I can see it was inevitable. Being a people pleaser/teacher’s pet type personality had me trying to do life the “normal” way: getting a nice corporate accounting job and just be happy doing that while maybe singing a little karaoke or doing random performances here and there. And honestly, my life would have been much easier if I could have felt happy and fulfilled with that. But something always hurt, it always felt so difficult, so tiring. By the time I was done with my “real” job I didn’t have the energy or passion left to do much of anything, let alone tap into my emotional creative side. In order to function in the corporate accounting system, I had to turn off a big part of who I am at my core and ignore my feelings just to fit in. I often found myself between jobs for various reasons (i.e. downsizing, housing collapse, EPA raid, etc.) that had nothing to do with my talents as an accounting professional. Looking back, I can see that it was always a sign (that I ignored) that corporate accounting wasn’t the right fit. I finally came to my senses about that around seven years ago when I left the corporate world to begin freelance accounting. This gives me the freedom of a flexible schedule so I can perform late-night shows and still keep my day job.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My music as a career is still very much in the beginning stages. I am working with a program that helps independent artists find their path in music without being exploited by the traditional music industry and it’s almost as if I’m starting over, but that’s OK! I am writing songs and hope to have one or two singles recorded in the next couple of months. I’m also going to be honing my home recording skills to be able to list myself as a Demo Singer/Top Line artist for hire soon. I am currently available for piano bar and solo acoustic shows as well as performing with my new cover band, Rock Candy, starting in August 5th. I’m proud of a few things, one of them being that, while I lost my way for a while, I never forgot where my true passion lies. I made some unlikely decisions in my “normal” job to follow my heart and put myself out there to make music again. In the past few years, I went from just playing a bit at home to performing in local bars on a regular basis and online shows during the pandemic. I learned guitar fairly quickly a few years ago – enough so I have options when playing a show.

What sets me apart is that I have a very strong voice with a pretty large range and I sing with soul. I am currently working on defining my sound, my message and my artist persona to help with branding and showcasing who I am as an artist.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Most important to my success right now is determination, and trust in myself to see the next aligned action and just do it. To be my whole authentic self unapologetically.
