Today we’d like to introduce you to May Be Fern. They and their team shared their story with us below:
The band began with Kate Fern (bass, vocals) and Hannah May (keys, guitar, vocals) in 2021.
After establishing themselves as a force in the Evergreen, CO music scene, they took the next step in May Be Fern’s evolution and brought on Denver-based musicians Madi Spillman (lead guitar) and Carleen Jeffers (drums). The foursome became quickly aligned with a shared vision: to create a unique sound that transcends genre and expectation. The band began playing out with covers, and after establishing their name quickly transitioned into writing and performing original music.
This transformation brought May Be Fern from the bar scene to sold-out Denver venues and festivals. We take pride in the dedication we give to every aspect of our business, including merch, branding, photography/videography, and our online presence. In March 2023, May Be Fern put out its first EP: Okay Grandma, Your Turn, a collection of seven songs spanning genres and emotions. We could not be more excited for what comes next!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Although the band’s growth has been steady and serendipitous, there have been obstacles along the way. As a queer non-male band, we face constant roadblocks while navigating the male-dominated music scene; this has only served as motivation for us to be more visible and more true in our identities. Another challenge for the band has been
finding the right niche that blends our individual backgrounds and musical styles.
For example, we re-recorded an entire song on Okay Grandma, Your Turn after deciding that the style in which it was played was no longer representative of our musical direction. We are constantly learning and adapting; collectively, we come away from each new show and each new experience with lessons learned.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The band is incredibly proud to work together not only as a collection of artists but as close friends and an unmoving system of support and community. Each member of the band specializes in a different aspect of the business, ranging from instrument repair and maintenance to visual arts and marketing. Playing to our individual strengths drives the band forward while allowing us to remain true to ourselves and our vision.
This also contributes to one of the hallmarks of May Be Fern and something that sets us apart from all the rest: the way our intra-band diversity of backgrounds, ideas, skills, and experiences complement each other to create something that is ultimately bigger than the sum of its parts.
