Exploring Life & Business with Alana Mascarenas of Scissors Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alana Mascarenas.

Hi Alana, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Denver Colorado. I am the oldest of four, three younger brothers, and one younger sister. I have always had a passion for hair, and going to take the boys to get haircuts every two weeks was hard and was pretty expensive. So, starting in 8th grade I took it amongst myself to try to cut my brother’s hair. Honestly speaking, now that I look back on it, they were great supporters because their haircuts had many mistakes even a couple of times they needed to shave it all off. During my senior year, I enrolled into a concurrent enrollment course to pursue my lifetime dream of being a cosmetologist. In 2021 I graduated with my high school diploma as well as my cosmetology license. Family was my biggest help as well as my biggest fans. Both of my parents are entrepreneurs so growing up I always knew that owning my own studio/salon was going to be a journey that I encountered in my life. I never would’ve imagined that coming out of school and having an opportunity to own my own studio was even an option. I am so grateful that in January 2022 I was able to open my own business/studio called Scissors Studio.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey has been a wave of a roller coaster. Scissor studio has had its ups and downs. Making sacrifices for my business was hard especially at a young age trying to balance financial stability, along with making time for family and friends. I had to realize that my business comes first and needs all of my attention. Work for me is 24/7 but it’s the sacrifice I’m willing to take to be successful in the future. At times I did feel discouraged and felt like quitting because things didn’t go as planned. I am so glad and thankful that I didn’t quit and that I had family to support me through this journey and not let me give up because I can’t imagine where I would be at in my life now if these obstacles weren’t addressed at the time they were.

As you know, we’re big fans of Scissors Studio LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Scissors Studio LLC. was just a dream before January 2022. But dreams do become reality when you push for it. Scissors is individually owned and operated by myself. The services that I provide are all things hair, nails, and facial waxing. The product that I use for hair is Kevin Murphy, as it provides protein and nutrients to help regain and renew damaged hair, as well as make the hair appear smooth and shiny. For nails the product line that I use is called CND, I found that this product line has magnificent colors as well as it lasts so much longer than any other color line that I have used before.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson that I have learned throughout this journey is that patience is key. Things never come out how you want them if it is rushed, I have learned by experience. With patience, things are done more efficiently, as well as more productive.
