Modern Sacred: Chelsea Henderson and Abby Payne on Building Community Through Shared Healing and Collective Growth

What began as a deeply personal connection has evolved into a powerful, community-centered platform for Chelsea Henderson and Abby Payne. Through Modern Sacred, they’ve created a space rooted not in expertise, but in shared experience — where women grow through reflection, collaboration, and honest conversation. Expanding from one-on-one coaching into a podcast and membership model, their work reflects a belief that healing happens in connection, not isolation. By blending accessible resources with intimate gatherings like retreats and “Goddess Dinners,” they foster both individual exploration and meaningful collective engagement. At its core, Modern Sacred is about reimagining how women support one another — cultivating spaces where self-worth, connection, and intergenerational community can thrive together.

Chelsea, Modern Sacred began from a deeply personal and intimate space. How did that early connection shape the vision you and Abby are building today?
For us, our entire offering and everything we do as a business is personal. We do not see ourselves as having the answers others need, rather, we are women doing our best to be our best in the world and want to share our experiences so we may all inform each other and grow together. Quite honestly, what we do would be hollow if we weren’t creating, collaborating, and approaching it all from a place of deep humility, intimate sharing, personal reflection, and kind mirroring.

Your platform has evolved from one-on-one coaching to a podcast and now a membership model. What inspired that growth, and how has your mission expanded along the way?
Many factors inspired our growth and expansion, the most significant was the clarity that formed around how each of us has developed practices for our own embodiment, healing, community-building, and values creation. We have each become more whole and full of authentic self-love through being witnessed, held, loved, and in community with other women doing the same. No expert entered our sphere to teach us “the way”, rather we slowly built our own practices and developed our own toolkits for being the best versions of ourselves by witnessing others and absorbing the collective wisdom along the way. It started for us when we wanted to share our intimate conversations with other women in our community. Because our podcast was so well received and listening women have asked for more, we created the membership as a space for those who enjoy and benefit from this work and content to explore deeper, work deeper, and connect more.

Community and real-time connection are central to your work. Why is creating shared spaces for women such a key part of healing and empowerment?
This is such a great question! We reflect often on our gender’s legacy and history. The systemic limitations that necessitated our self-empowerment have been in place so long that generations of women have worked around them. When we slow down and reflect on the experiences and collective wisdom of those who came before us, we can see clearly that: women have always gathered; women have often worked communally to take care of the whole; women have long witnessed and guided each other without hierarchy or judgement, instead operating with the awareness that the more individuals flourish the more the collective flourishes. Even more personally, when Abby and I decided to work collaboratively instead of individually, everything expanded exponentially for both of us. It was remarkable! That expansion deepened our awareness of the importance of witnessing and sharing in each other’s journeys. Two lights together are not double one light, rather the brightness increases exponentially and attracts more and more lights.

From virtual resources to in-person events like “Goddess Dinners” and retreats, how do you balance accessibility with meaningful, deeper connection?
We intentionally balance resources women can use on their own time with in-person or virtual face-to-face events that encourage connectivity and create accountability for ourselves and each other. We couple this with a continuous attempt to keep our prices reasonable and to share our work as collaboratively as possible with diverse populations.

As Modern Sacred continues to grow, what kind of impact do you hope it has on the way women connect with themselves and each other?
Our intention is to be a rising tide that lifts all boats in the waters we share. We see the offerings we create as deeply impactful work that heals and betters ourselves so we can heal and better the collective. Women have largely been conditioned to give to others, often to the point of depletion and burnout. When you surround yourself with other embodied women, love and nurturance have a chance to circulate and flow into you. This is the importance of having a space to both see and be seen by other women.

As Modern Sacred continues to grow, we hope to see women create lifelong, intergenerational friendships, gather both online and in person and bring other women into the fold of collective healing.
