Today we’d like to introduce you to Baylee Madison.
Hi Baylee, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I suppose it all started when I was a teenager and someone invited me to attend a meeting encouraging students to work at a haunted house for the season. I was super reluctant and tried to sneak out the back when someone caught my attention and convinced me to join the makeup team. Needless to say, it all unfolded from there! I fell in love with special effects makeup and a few years down the line I began body painting. It was really an incredible journey finding new aspects of my artistry along the way. I then began working for myself as an independent artist creating art for events, haunted houses, fashion shows, makeup brands, etc. I found my home among the misfits and monsters and that’s where my heart has remained!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say yes and no, yes in the sense that it’s been an exciting journey and an honor to go through the motions and to grow as an artist but also no in the sense that it has definitely been challenging to find my passions and to make decisions on where I want to land in this industry. I’ve been incredibly lucky to have many of my dreams come true. So many doors have opened to me because of my work which has been a gift unmatched, to say the least! But with any creation comes a rollercoaster I believe.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a self-taught special effects makeup and body paint artist. I feel my specialties are definitely horror, dark art, character makeup, scene paints, etc. I think it’s pretty safe to say I’m mostly known for my character makeup and dark beauty looks. However, I do also cosplay fairly regularly and it is something I’m definitely passionate about as well. My personal favorite thing about my own art is my attention to detail- I’m absolutely obsessed with detail! I’m by far most proud of my achievements and honors in my field. Ranging from being featured in magazines I grew up reading or seeing on newsstands to being invited to events I used to dream of attending! I’ve worked alongside brands I’ve idolized since my youth, met all of the people I have looked up to most, taught classrooms, and created art for some of my favorite film production companies and makeup brands. It’s something I catch myself in awe of every day. Every time my art opens a door like this, I am taken aback by how thankful I am to live this life. I hope little me hiding in the back of the theater during that meeting, looks at me now and is proud. It’s really humbling and truly wild.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I am always up for working with creatives and other artists, collaborating, creating new pieces of content, whatever it may I love working with people in the industry and like-minded creatives. I truly believe that collaborating is a large part of what got me to where I’m at in my art in the first place!
