Life & Work with Breonn Lyons

Today we’d like to introduce you to Breonn Lyons.

Hi Breonn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started photography back in 2018 with a few props from the dollar store, a lamp, and my garage. I was surprised by the work I was able to produce with that humble combination. Ever since then, I’ve kept going. I started playing dress-up in my room- the makeup, clothing, and just kept shooting. To this day I still follow the same process I always have, which is very comforting for me. And as I’ve gotten closer to finishing school, I’ve realized that I have to prepare for holding a day job that’ll cover my living expenses as I pursue my acting career, so I registered my photography as an LLC, and I’ve been going strong ever since. It’s been a beautiful journey.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think any artist who aspires to make art their primary source of income has had to deal with getting used to the business side of this profession, and that’s what’s been the main homework for me lately- learning how to manage the business side by myself. And overall just learning how to be very self sufficient- I’m my own accountant, my manager, my hair stylist, set designer, and so on because I have to be. It’s challenging doing it all alone sometimes but it sharpens you.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a multifaceted artist. I do many different things and am known for different things- some people know me through acting, while others know me for dance, my paintings, or even my photography. I used to get flustered by this expectation of categorizing myself as an artist or picking one thing and marrying it. But now I don’t. I’m a visual artist. I think that in the same vein of trying to “define” myself as an artist, I’ve started not to, and I think this is what I’m most proud of and what sets me apart from others. I have so many options for cathartic and creative outlets that I can pour my heart out into a poem with just as much power and passion as I could speak a monologue or perform a dance solo.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was when I was in maybe fourth or fifth grade, I went to this karaoke night that one of my mom’s friends was having at a catering night for their charity organization. After sitting there debating with myself whether or not to just do it, I finally went up on that stage in front of everybody, and sang “Single Ladies” by Beyonce. I was petrified. I remember these two older ladies were dancing in front of me, one of them cheering me on with a tambourine, and I’m like belting my heart out for her trying not to pass out out of fear. I remember sitting down thinking “Oh my gosh I did it!?” And to this day, that little moment showed me that I can get up and do the damn thing even when I’m drowning in my nerves. If there’s something you really want to do, and it scares you, do it scared. You’d be surprised by what you can actually do.
