Today we’d like to introduce you to Silas Mwenda.
Hi Silas, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am an actor, voice-over artiste and motion picture original soundtrack writer/singer represented by – Savage Agency, West Hollywood. I was born and raised in Kenya, Africa but moved to the US to chase after my dreams you know. I’ve always had a passion for entertainment and serving other people. Acting has been one of my favorite thing to do since I was a little boy in my village back in Kenya. My life has not been easy at all, I had to fight so much but am so grateful right now coz I able to follow my dreams and finally coz I can see how promising the future looks. Been on a number of feature films and others are on post-production. My greatest joy in my life is to serve and entertain people. When I see people happy and smiling, it makes me feel great in return. I do run a children’s orphanage in Kenya which I started two years ago to help very needy kids. They are very smart kids with no one to call their parents or any place to call home. Most of the proceeds I get from my acting work has been going straight to support their feeding, clothing and schooling. It hasn’t been an easy ride but I feel happy when I see those kids smile. This has motivated me a lot to do what I do and keep going this touching and changing other people’s lives through my talent.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
To be honest, it hasn’t been an easy ride at all. Relocating from Africa to a new country, adapting in it and starting a career here was a bit challenging initially. This industry is full of obstacles but the passion and drive for the art has made me overcome it all.You know when the love is bigger than the worries, barriers and anxiety. Positive attitude and hard work has been the backbone of my journey and not allowing challenges to define me. Regardless of how tough the going is. You know one thing many people doesn’t know is as an actor your ability to perform is measured other people haha- casting directors. You can’t cast yourself. Our work is just to audition and let the producers and casting directors decide if they gonna book you or not. Knowing who you are your worth and how to handle rejection and learning how remaining calm is the Key . You know you have to fight for what you love doing and more so always believing that you are a winner.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Am an artiste – actor, voice-over artiste and motion picture original songwriter/singer. I’ve worked on a number of films from short, web series and feature films. Some of the films I’ve worked on include Love Lily, To Be You, Our Souls at Night, Thou shall pump, and Scene among others. I also wrote and sang the original motion picture soundtrack for the Canadian and Nigerian feature film ‘Finding Odera’ which is set to be released later this year – 2022.The song has been submitted for 95th academy awards and am looking forward to a nomination.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Yeah, I believe in finding and having a solid mentor. You know in this tough and demanding creative industry I’ve found it so beneficial to surround myself with great, positive and inspiring people. People who can inspire, correct me with love and sharpen me. You know an iron sharpens and iron. When am not feeling so motivated, when I need the right advice it’s always important have someone knowledgeable that you trust. Someone who has walked the same path before and have some know-how on how to maneuver. It does help! I believe one person can walk faster but two people can walk farther.
